RE: Michigan Swimming Sponsored Swim Camp
Date: July 20, 2015
I am excited to announce that our new Camps and Clinics Committee has already made great headway, led by Jr Coach Rep and Committee Chair, Drew Hansz and Committee Vice Chair, Chris Thompson. There will be a one day Distance Camp held at MSU, scheduled for August 15, 2015. This camp will be a pilot program for Camps and Clinics we intend to offer in the spring. These camps are being developed to raise the levels of swimming performance within the LSC. By bringing specific athletes and coaches together, we are going to develop and strengthen the best practices, and then spread it back to their teams to further the ideals and training within the LSC.
There will be qualifications for attending the Camps. Some may be specific for elite level athletes; some may be more open for overall developmental purposes. We will have much more information about our camps, as we work through the model and how/where to deliver it in 2016.
The Distance Select Camp on August 15 will be free to the selected athletes. We will be inviting the top 8 girls and boys in both 13-14 and 15-18, based on Power Point rankings used by USA Swimming.
Every result listed in the USA Swimming SWIMS database includes a Power Point value. This point system allows for comparison of the quality of performances across strokes, distances and events, as well as between age groups. The Power Point scale ranges from 1 to 1100 points. The higher the points, the stronger that time is in that event.
The qualifying period for the August 15th Distance Select Camp is 9/1/2014 through the 2015 Open Long Course State Meet. The USA Power Point rankings will be based on the 1650y/1500m Free and the next highest score from either the 1000y/800m, 500y/400m, or 400 IM rankings. We have developed lists based on this criteria and will update as soon as the State Meet is done August 2. Invitations will go out immediately after and we will work down the list to fill all 32 spots.
The Camp will be a one day event comprised of a two hour workout, classroom talk, and lunch. It will feature 5 coaches for the 32 athletes invited, led by Chris Thompson, the 2000 Sydney Olympic Bronze Medalist in 1500m Free and former American record holder in the 1650y free. The coaching staff, camp itinerary, and information is at the Camps & Clinics webpage on the MI Swimming website. Click Here or click the Distance Select Camp icon on the home page.
