Carleen M. Alexander, 68, of Hixson went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday March 29, 2016 following a courageous and valiant battle with breast cancer. She departed peacefully with her family at her side. Carleen was born in Louisville, Kentucky, December 8, 1947 and soon moved to Hixson where she attended Hixson schools. She received a Bachelor degree from Tennessee Tech and Master's Degrees from Tennessee Tech and Peabody. She was a charter member of Zeta Chi Chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at Tech. Carleen was a retired educator from HCDE having taught at Hixson area schools. She was a member of the Wesley Class at Hixson United Methodist Church. Carleen loved collecting children's books and reading to her children and grandchildren whom she loved dearly and they loved their "Meemie" dearly. She was known for giving books to other parents and grandparents to read to their children, thus building everlasting relationships and encouraging children to become lifetime readers.
Carleen was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Jane McKinley, brothers George McKinley, Joe Phillips, and Clifford Phillips.
Survivors include Husband of 48 years, Larry Alexander, Daughters: Sydney (Shannon Toon) of Memphis, Elizabeth Kelley, and son Robert (Whitney) Alexander of Atlanta. Grandchildren include Owen, Laurel Ann, and Grayson Alexander, Jordan Kelley and Zephy Kelley; brothers, Dan (Annette) McKinley and David (Bonnie) Phillips.
In accordance with her request, her remains were donated to research.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening March 31 from 4-7 pm at the funeral home followed by a memorial service and celebration of life at Hixson United Methodist Church at 11:00 on Friday April 1.
