NewsWaves April 27th, 2016

We are off to an excellent start to the 2016 Long Course Season! Thank you to all swimmers and families for your flexibility in scheduling while the VHE Pool maintenance was going on at the start of the season, and it is great to get back to our “regular” schedule.

New Coach

We would like to welcome Mandie Siehs to our coaching staff the Spring. Mandie is a Junior swimmer at UWM, where she is a Horizon League Conference Champion and UWM school record holder. She has experience coaching younger swimmers with EBSC and MFSC, and has already done a great job as she transitions to the lead coach of the AG-Bronze group. Please make sure to welcome Mandie to the team!

Pineapple Meet

Our Pineapple Meet was a huge success again this year. It is always a great way to start the season with a meet that allows the swimmers to compete in so many events, and finish off with the exciting relays at the end.

A big thanks goes out to the many volunteers who made the meet a success. Our Meet Directors, Dave and Lauren Lotter, did an excellent job at their first meet, with the help of veteran meet directors Paul Dix, Michael Jorn, and Josh Szablewski. Thanks to our volunteer coordinator Tina Desing for a great job in staffing the meet. Other invaluable volunteers who are essential to running this meet were Andi Bowen, who coordinated all of the concessions, Melissa Anderson, who coordinated all of the awards, and to our officials-Pat Weisling, Radhika Maheshwari, Monna Arvinen-Barrow, Chafik Bengana, Andy Jacobs, and Jim Youngquist.

I would also like to thank our coaches-Suzy Paasch, Mandie Siehs, Jess McCabe, Amy Chenault, and Emily Schweitz. They did a great job preparing the swimmers for the first meet of the season, which is usually a little rough due to the relatively limited preparation and time since our last competition (most kids have not competed for two months!). They did a great job getting swimmers to their events, and started off with some fast swimming to build on for the rest of the season.

Finally, great job to the swimmers. We had some excellent performances, but, more importantly, we saw some of what we are working on in practices carry over into the meets. This season, we are making a very strong push for the swimmers to “perform in practice in the same way you want to perform in a meet”. We really want the swimmers to draw the correlation between practice and meets, in technique, racing skills, and effort.

Team Apparel

Our order form for Team Apparel is now available through Burghardt’s Sporting Goods. The online order form ( Burghardts Order Form ) includes t-shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, shorts, and many other new items. We encourage all team members (parents and swimmers) to wear team apparel at all meets, but also at school and out in the community. If there are items that you would like to see on future orders, please let me know! The deadline to order is Monday, May 2nd. Please make sure to get you orders in on time.

The Walter’s suits have been distributed-if you did not receive your suit yet, please take to Dave (there are a few on back order). The Speedo bags and Speedo warm ups arrived today, and you can pick them up at the VHE Pool. If you missed placing and order for our Speedo products (suits, warm ups, bags), please contact Walter’s at 262-790-9199, and they will take your order.

AG Gold parents should also contact Walter’s to buy the following items: Speedo mesh bag, Speedo short training fins, and Finis center mount snorkel.

As many of you know, at many meets it is common practice for the host team to “bag” the awards, and send them home with the coaches to distribute to their team. We try to get these awards out as soon as possible, but it is a large task to sort the awards and get them to the appropriate swimmers. We are fortunate to have two parents (and families) who have helped with this task recently. Please make sure to thank Rhiana Vella and Renee Griswold for the time and effort that they spend to get the awards out to the kids as quickly as are able.

College Choices

We would like to congratulate our four graduating Seniors, who have all decided where they will spend their college years. This choice is probably the most important decision in their lives up until this point, and we are excited that all four will be continuing to swim in college. Monica Dix will attend Oberlin College in Oberlin, OH. Zach Hammond and Eva Jorn will attend Denison University in Granville, OH. Michael Perry will attend Washington University in St. Louis. These are all great swimming “fits” for these athletes, where they will be contributing members on some excellent teams. Please congratulate these swimmers on some great choices!
