As this year's community service project for our team,
on Friday, July 15th we
would like to use a small portion of the morning practices for
the swim team to stuff "Backpacks" for Loudoun
County's Backpack Buddies (BPB) program
which provides food for needy children on the weekends through a
bag of non-perishable items (specified by BPB) to cover several
meals and snacks. Our team will be filling
backpacks/bags that will go to our neighborhood
schools. Knowing how generous the Broadlands community
is, our target is to pack 200
backpacks. In order to reach that goal, we
are asking families to contribute to the food drive and we
have created a sign-up genius for parents to see the items
needed (mostly bulk packs of the items that can be purchased at
Costco and some at Target).
How it will work:
- Sign up to
contribute: Piranha Families can sign up for any of the
needed backpack food contents -- buying in bulk is the best bet
-- as outlined in the sign up
- Food item drop off: Families can bring their contributions to the pool on at our Home B meet and at the morning practice. (We will need the day of the 14th to determine if/where we need to buy additional items to supplement, etc).
- Pack! At morning practices (all age groups) on , swimmers will end their practice by spending a few (10) minutes packing the backpacks on the grass area where we will have stations set up with the various items. Swimmers will each have a specified number of bags to fill -- they will each visit the item "stations" to fill the food bags.
- Want to volunteer? We will likely need some volunteers to help organize onsite and staff the stations -- hoping we can get some high schoolers who need volunteer hours to help with this. We will do a "sample bag" so that it's easy for everyone to see/know what goes in each bag.
