Whiskeytown Open Water

 

Five swimmers from the Mendocino Coast Sea Dragons swim team challenged themselves in the Whiskeytown Open Water Race, a USA Swimming and USA Masters Swimming event, on Sunday September 11th.  Sea Dragons, Jack Kroninger, competing in his first open water event, Mitchel Walker and Dylan Hutchinson competed in the one-mile race (11-18 age division) and Haley Hutchinson competed in the two-mile race (11-18 division). D.Hutchinson and H.Hutchinson were the overall female winners in their event. Head Coach Derek Hutchinson swam in the Masters two-mile event and took 2nd place in his division. The course started and ended with running entry and finish at Brandy Creek Beach on the south east side of Whiskeytown Lake located in the Trinity Mountain drainage west of Redding, CA. The race course was marked by large buoys and patrolled by the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Park Rangers, lifeguards and officials and volunteers on paddleboards and kayaks. The Sea Dragons had a lot of fun and swam really well in the beautiful 70-degree water.
