Kathy Coffin-Sheard accepts Director of Competitive Swimming!


Kathy rejoins the Grand Traverse Breakers Swim Team as Head Coach starting January 23, 2017.  Kathy was a part-time coach for the Breakers developmental group in 2010.  Currently, Kathy leads the GTBay YMCA Masters Swim Team.


Formerly an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s teams at  her alma mater, the University of Georgia, she was also a Division I -12 time All-American and member of the United States National Swimming team for 3 years, carrying a 9th place world ranking in the 50 meter freestyle.


Relocating from Madison, WI, with her husband John, son Logan and dog pack in 2009, has given this former art educator, an opportunity to work with the masters swimming community in the Traverse City area since 2010.  Kathy has built the local masters swim team to a solid group of 60, who host and travel for meets and swim open water events together.


Embracing all aspects United States Masters Swimming, United States Swimming and YMCA Swimming, Kathy’s goals are to stay fresh with coaching techniques, work with a diverse age ranges and abilities and to inspire swimmers to set and attain new goals.


Kathy was recognized for her passion and dedication on and off the pool deck when she was awarded the Kerry O’Brien Coaching Award at the USAS Convention in 2015.
