Coach April's Resignation

We’ve lost Coach April. She was getting busy with her teaching schedule before she left for vacation, and when she returned, was basically overwhelmed with the amount of work she had ahead of her. Last Friday (While I was up at a meet in Stanford), she resigned.

I know many of the novice swimmers had become very fond of Coach April, and will miss her. I just got back in town late last night (about midnight), and had to get up at 4:00 for morning practice, so I’m not 100% right now, but I will begin searching for someone to fill April’s shoes.

Losing a coach is always hard, and finding someone to coach the novice level may take a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I and the other coaches will make sure that the novice swimmers receive a little extra attention.

Thanks, Dave

For those of you who are interested here is her final e-mail to me:

Hey Dave,

I just wanted to get in touch with you regarding my coaching status.  After tonight (Friday April 4th) I will no longer have the time commitment to make for coaching.  I am currently teaching 6/5 at my high school job and it is requiring me to put in a lot of hours over the course of this semester.  We also have several school events coming up over the next few weeks which interfere with the practice time (for instance Monday we have a late meeting after school for the school accreditation team, Wednesday is a school event, and Friday is an additional meeting after school for the accreditation summary- and starting the following week is STAR testing and the CAHSEE).  I have really tried over the last few months, since we last talked about me leaving, to work out a schedule that would allow me to be involved with CAST as well as continue to make my full commitment to my teaching job.  But right now it’s just not feasible for me to be committed to both my high school students as well as the CAST swimmers.

I sincerely apologize for the late notice but I have really tried to workout my schedule so that I could accommodate both commitments.  The kids really deserve someone who can be there full time for them.  You have a great group of novice swimmers who have so much potential.  Maybe in the future I will be able to make a full time commitment as I did last year- but since picking up the extra class this semester I just haven’t had the time I did last semester.  I can’t promise my availability but feel free to call me if there is ever a need for a "fill in" coach (vacation, etc.).

I really want to thank you for the opportunity to work at CAST and I have really enjoyed my time with you and the kids.  I have learned a great deal about the sport and coaching itself.  Best of luck to you and all of the CAST swimmers!
