March was a busy and exciting month for the Mendocino Coast Sea Dragons swim team! Several swimmers participated in meets all over northern California, including All-Star meets, qualifying meets and standard C/B/A meets.

            Three MCSD swimmers were selected to represent Zone 3 in the Pacific Swimming 14-under All-Star Meet in Vallejo, CA on March 4-5. Swimmers had to apply and qualify for this meet and only the top eight swimmers from each zone, within each age group, were accepted. MCSD’s Irma Jimenez-Hernandez (girls 8-under division), Dylan Hutchinson (girls 11-12 division) and Alexi Huerta (girls 13-14 division) represented Zone 3 at this meet.

            A week later, Mendocino Coast Sea Dragon’s Dylan Hutchinson (girls 11-12) qualified and competed at the 2017 Pacific Swimming Short Course 14-Under Junior Olympic meet in Concord. Dylan competed in nine events, qualified for finals in four of those events, and achieved an AAAA time standard in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:36.99) for 4th place and an AAA time standard in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.20) for 8th place.

            Twelve MCSD swimmers traveled to Rohnert Park the following weekend, March 25-26 for the Piranha Progressive meet. Each swimmer swam at least one personal best time—all placed well and most importantly all had fun! Highlights include:

Boys 8 Under:

Xander Caranicolas competed in four events and took 1st place (C) in the 50-yard backstroke (1:00.13).

Girls 8 Under:

Irma Jimenez-Hernandez competed in seven events and took 2nd place (B) with a personal best time in the 50-yard breaststroke (1:00.25).

Girls 9-10:

Elena Caranicolas competed in eight events and swam a personal best for a BB time standard in the 50-yard backstroke for 2nd place (B). Serenity Godoy improved her time in five of seven events and took 2nd place (C) in the 50-yard backstroke (53.17). Adeleah Leombruno improved her time in all seven events swum and took 3rd place (C) in the 50-yard breaststroke (59.72). Rhiannon McColley improved all four events swum and took 1st place (C) in the 100-yard backstroke (1:46.87). Savanna Oglesby improved her time in five of six events and took 2nd place (C) in the 100-yard freestyle (1:33.67). Yomaris Real-Lopez improved her time in two of four events and took 2nd place in the 25-yard backstroke (22.47). Adrianna Salazar competed in eight events and took 1st place (B) in the 50-yard breaststroke (46.07).

Boys 11-12:

Alfonso Jimenez-Hernandez competed in eight events and took 1st place (B) in the 500-yard freestyle (6:27.29).

Girls 11-12:

Nicole Can-Can improved her time in three of seven events including the 100-yard breaststroke (1:59.13).

Girls 13-14:

Alexi Huerta competed in eight events and swam a best time for 1st place (B) in the 200-yard freestyle (2:15.88).

            The month wrapped up with Sea Dragons Haley Hutchinson and Dylan Hutchinson competing at the 2017 Speedo Short Course Far Western Championship meet in Pleasanton, CA, March 30-April 2. This four-day qualifying meet included over 1500 swimmers from all over the western states. Preliminaries were swum each morning with the top 10 qualifiers swimming finals at night. Haley, competing in girls 15-16, improved her time in two of three events including the 200-yard IM (2:12.53) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.88) where she took 8th place. Dylan, competing in girls 13-14, improved her time in both events swum including the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.21) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:32.70).
