Lisa Ellis Graduates from San Jose State
Hi, everyone!
I just wanted to update everyone and let you all know that I am graduating and give you an update on what I will be doing in the next few years!
I have been attending San José State University for the last four years where I have been studying Global Studies with a minor in Human Rights. Throughout my time here I have been received the All-Mountain West Conference Academic Awards, been named a Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athlete and a Dean’s Scholar.
I have also been a member of the SJSU swim team for the past four years and was a team captain for the past two years. Through swimming, I have also been fortunate enough to be a team representative and the Secretary for SAAC (SJSU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee). This year was exactly the way I wanted to finish my swimming career. I knew the SJSU coaches gave me a very special chance to swim D1 right out of high school and I was thankful to be on the non-scoring exhibition conference team freshman year. I knew it was going to take a lot of hard work, but senior year I was able to make the 200 Backstroke finals at the conference championships and score points for my team. Mountain West Conference has been ranked the fifth fastest conference in the nation, so it has been a struggle to keep up with our competition. That 200 Back at the conference championships made it onto the SJSU Swim and Dive all-time top-10 list. Swimming has given me so much and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my Orca, Penguin, NSA, Miner or Spartan Coaches and teammates.
Here is a little more about my swimming career on my bio:
Currently, I have an internship with UniversalGiving® an award-winning nonprofit in San Francisco that allows people to donate and volunteer with top-performing, vetted organizations all over the world. I was originally hired on as an Executive Assistant to the CEO and have since added on NGO Outreach/Consulting, Social Media and New Intern Manager to my list of titles. They have also offered me a position starting at the end of May where I can choose to work in the office or remotely (online).
I have completed all my units and classes in order to graduate, but I still need to complete the “Global Experience” requirement for my major in order to get a diploma. I will be walking in graduation on May 26th, 2017 and will be completing my “Global Experience” this upcoming Fall. I have been accepted into a study abroad program at Universidad Pública de Navarra in Pamplona, Spain where I will be studying, but mostly traveling, from August 2017 through January 2018.
After I get back from Spain, I hope to get a master's degree in Social Sciences with a concentration in Social Justice and Human Rights. As of right now, I am not positive of where I want to pursue this degree. Once I get back, I’ll have a better idea. I hope to further look into Community Organizing as well as International Relations.
I am so happy to share my accomplishments with you all and I am so thankful for you all supporting me along the way! I have had an absolutely incredible time to past four years and I wouldn’t have wanted to spend it anywhere else. I have had the best team and coaches who helped me thrive as an athlete, be a better person and actually like school. I fell in love with learning (something I never thought would happen) and have found my passion for Social Justice. I cannot wait to see where I go next!
Please feel free to forward this to any other friends, family, teachers coaches or neighbors I may have missed! I don’t seem to have everyone’s email addresses. Also, please let me know if you have any recommendations of places I should go to while I’m abroad.
Thank you!!!
Lisa Ellis
