Swim Parenting 101

Barracuda Families,

When it comes to being a swim parent, here are the basics:  Be positive and supportive. Model good sportsmanship.  Make sure your child knows that your love & approval isn’t dependent upon their performance.

Some things to say before a race

  1. Go get ‘em!
  2. Good luck!
  3. You’re ready for this!
  4. You can do this!
  5. Do your best!
  6. Try hard!
  7. I can’t wait to see you swim!

Things to say after a race

  1. Did you talk to your coach?
  2. You were a good sport!
  3. I’m proud of you!
  4. I love to watch you swim!

What to say after a meet

  1. Where do you want to go eat?
  2. Should we go out for ice cream?
  3. Do you want to go do something special together?
  4. What’s your favorite stroke?
  5. What’s your favorite race?
  6. What do you like about swimming?

A great resource for parents of any sport is

My best advice - Praise the effort, not the result.  Be proud of your kids for trying something new and difficult.  Don’t let this be the biggest thing in anyone’s life – Swimming is a game and it’s supposed to be fun!
