The Hood River Valley Swim Team Osprey finished 17th at the 11 and Over Oregon Swimming Championships this past weekend at Mt Hood. Every swimmer achieved multiple personal best times – in fact there were only a few that were not personal bests - on the way to a team 17th place overall finish.

Leading the team were Sarah Arpag and Michelle Graves, who broke HRVST team records along the way to their stellar performances. Michelle tied a 10 yr old record in the 50m breaststroke with a time of 39.25, last set by Mariah Rawding at the State Championships back in 2008. And Sarah lowered her own team record set earlier this summer in the 100m backstroke with a time of 1:11.15.

Sarah (14 yrs) scored a team high 20 points at this meet, and also achieved an Age Group Zone qualifying time in the 100m freestyle, with a time of 1:01.79 and 4th place finish. Athletes for this competition in Roseville, California will be chosen on Tuesday July 31st based on Oregon Swimming team needs and qualifying times. Sarah placed 3rd in the 200m free (2:17.70), 5th in the 100m backstroke, 6th in the 200m Individual Medley (2:35.76), 7th in the 200m backstroke (2:35.45) and 18th in the 100m butterfly (1:15.20).

Nora Sandoval (13 yrs)scored 17 points for the team, and achieved a Senior Sectional qualifying time in the 400m freestyle with a 3rd place finish (4:43.09). She also placed 4th in the 1500m free with a huge 30 second time drop on the last day of the meet (19:13.89). Nora was 6th in both the 800m free (9:56.27) and 200m free (2:18.46) events, she finished 10th in the 400m Individual Medley (5:38.19) and 12th in the 200m Individual Medley with a time of 2:43.00.

Allie Burke (17 yrs), who is heading to Pacific Lutheran University this fall to swim for the Lutes, scored 9.5 points and finished 5th at State in the 800m free (10:00.96). She finished tied for 6th in the 400m free (4:55.35) and was 6th in the 1500m free (19:52.94). She also competed in the 400m Individual Medley and placed 14th.

Michelle Graves (12 yrs) scored 9 points and seemed to enjoy that 7th place finish this meet. She placed 7th in the 200m Individual Medley (2:45.23), the 50m breaststroke, the 100 m butterfly (1:18.54), but snagged 6th on the last day in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:26.34. She also finished 11th in the 50m free (31.60) and 15th in the 50m butterfly (36.02).

Willow Hollowell (11 yrs) scored 9 points and swam to 100% best times at this meet, including a 9 second drop in the 200m freestyle for a 10th place finish. Willow's top finish was 5th place in the 50m butterfly (34.40). She also placed 7th in both the 100m butterfly (1:20.69) and 7th in the 200 Individual Medley (2:53.34). She was 8th in the 100m backstroke (1:22.25) and was 21st in the 100m breaststroke. (1:39.25).

Phillip Hecksel (19 yrs) scored 9 points and had a 4th place finish in the 200m butterfly (2:18.78), finished 7th in the 200m free (2:06.28) and 8th in the 50m free (25.57). He also swam to a 12th place finish in the 100m free (56.12), and was 18th in the 100m butterfly (1:02.03).

Christopher Dankenbring (13 yrs) scored 4 points also had a huge drop in his 800m free of 36 seconds to finish with a 10:20.34 and 5th place. He also placed 10th in the 200 fly (2:44.99), 11th in the 1500m free (20:41.07), was 14th in both the 200m free (2:22.71) and the 400m free (4:58.62) and he rounded out his lineup with a 16th place finish in the 400m Individual Medley (5:55.97).

Skyla Hollowell (12 yrs) finished in that first alternate position for finals twice – she took 9th place in both the 200m Individual Medley (2:48.99) and in the 400m free (5:13.93). She was 13th in the 100m butterfly (1:19.53), 14th in the 200m free (2:31.15), she took 16th in the 100m breaststroke (1:33.65) and rounded out her line up with a 17th place finish in the 100m backstroke (1:20.84).

The team will finish their summer season with the Newport Seahorse Invitational August 10-12th.
