Mercury swimmers to represent their schools at the New York State Championships

Over the past few months local swimmers have been working hard swimming for their high school varsity swim teams. Five of those swimmers are members of Mercury Swimming and have punched their ticket to the big meet, the New York State Championship meet.

Dansville junior Aidan Kreiley, Geneseo senior Alex Kruger, Perry senior Sam Matthews, Campbell-Savona juniors Caine Taft & Jacob Sullivan have all qualified in at least one event to compete in the state meet. In high school, swimmers are only allowed to compete in 2 individual events and 2 relays per meet. Some of these boys have qualified in more than two events. This means they have to decide what two events they think they stand the best chance to make it back to finals in.

Alex Kruger of Geneseo will be making his fourth trip to states. This year Alex qualified in the 100 Butterfly. Alex’s current time in the Fy is a 53.81 which ranks him at number five in Section V.

Sam Matthews of Perry will be making his second appearance at states. This year Sam qualified in the 50 Freestyle, 100 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly. In the 50 Free Sam is ranked 8th in Section V with a 21.84. In the 100 Free he is ranked 7th in Section V with a 48.22. In the 100 Fly Sam has the number one time in Section V with a 52.23 and is ranked 20th in NYS.

Caine Taft of Campbell-Savona will be making his first trip to the NYS meet. Caine had a great Class D meet where he qualified for states in the 50 Free, 100 Free and the 200 Free Relay. In the 50 Free Caine is ranked 11th in Section V with a 21.95. Caines time of 47.78 in the 100 Free ranks him 3rd in Section V and 29th in NYS.

Jacob Sullivan of Campbell-Savona will also be making his first trip to states. Jacob is a member of the 200 Free Relay team that qualified with a time of 1:29.93. Caine Taft will join Jacob as a member of the relay team. Their time of 1:29.93 ranks the Campbell-Savona group 6th in Section V and 34th in NYS.

Aidan Kreiley of Dansville will be making his third trip to the big dance. Aidan had a big year on varsity qualifying for five individual events, the 200 IM, 100 Free, 200 Free, 500 Free & the 100 Breast. Aidan’s time in the 200 IM of 1:57.25 ranks him 3rd in Section V. In the 100 Free he is ranked 8th in Section V with a 48.45. In the 200 Free he is ranked 4th in Section V with a 1:46.28. In the 500 Free is time of 4:43.85 ranks him #2 in Section V and 15th in NYS. And finally in the 100 Breast Aidan’s time of 57.04 puts him #1 in Section V and 3rd in NYS.

Aidan will likely swim the 200 IM and 100 Breast at states. Last year Aidan came home from the state meet with 4th place and a time of 56.79 in the 100 Breast.

The NYSPHSAA Swimming Championships will be held at the Nassau Aquatics Center in Long Island on March 1st & 2nd. Mercury Swimming would like to wish our five boys, their coaches and their families safe travels, a good time and fast swims.
