Diving Introduction & Jobs

Hello TST Diving Families,

Welcome back to all of our returning TST divers and welcome to the team for all of our new divers! My name is Beth Mitchell and I am the diving coordinator this season. My family has been with TST for 7 years. I no longer have any active divers however I do enjoy helping. This season we have 2 wonderful coaches that are both very talented divers themselves. They both have a lot of knowledge to share with your children!

The diving portion of each meet is usually held prior to the swim portion, which means our arrival time is much earlier. For home meets we need more volunteers and I know this can interfere with work schedules so if you are a family that can arrive early (usually by 4:00) please consider signing up for the set-up jobs. Our team is volunteer run so we need every family to contribute. TST requires each family to volunteer for 3 jobs and 1 champs job. The only difference between swim and dive is that we do ask that the diving families sign up for the diving volunteer jobs before selecting a swim meet job. We are a smaller group, so we need our volunteer slots filled first. Volunteer opportunities for diving are all jobs that DO NOT require training. The job descriptions are listed below:

Home meet needs:

Set-up/Clean-up- Bring out all diving items from the shed, set up pop-up tent, rope off the diving area and fill cooler. At the conclusion of the diving portion of the meet, clean up all items that were set up.

Computer/Scores Table-  Record all scores announced and/or assist with entering them into the computer system

Judges- Score each dive as performed. A quick guideline will be given at the beginning of the meet as to what you are looking for. There will be a meet director that will decide if the skill performed is disqualified. NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED for this job. Note: There are 5 judges at each meet (3 from home team and 2 from away team) and the highest and lowest scores are not counted so there is no pressure if you feel like your scores would be inaccurate.

Announcer- Someone that will read a fully detailed script from a printed paper. No diving  knowledge needed. Usually with a microphone but in the event of technical difficulties will need a loud voice for all to hear around the diving well

Away meet needs:

Computer/Scores Table-  Record all scores announced and/or assist with entering them into the computer system if the home team has E-Dive system.

We will be including the diving volunteer jobs on the team sign-up which will be coming out on June 6th so stay tuned for that email/link to select your jobs this season.

For any families, new to diving, we would like to keep you informed and help you navigate the sport with as much ease as possible. I have included a few FAQ’s below to help answer any questions you may be thinking about but do not hesitate reach out if you have any questions/concerns throughout the season. Please feel free to reach out to me if I can assist in any way. You can track me down at the pool, email me at [email protected] or text my cell 267-424-5447. Text is the preferred method for a quick response (I only check my email 1-2 a day).

FAQ:

  • How will I know if my child is diving in the meet? The coaches will have a list of divers the morning of the meet that will include who is diving that evening. Your child should know at practice the day of the meet.

  • Why won’t my child dive in every meet? There are 2 reasons.
    1. Each meet there is a required dive for each level. If your child has not yet been able to perform the dive successfully/safely they will be ineligible to compete that meet.
    2. There are a limited number of divers allowed to compete each meet, so the coaches will do their best at getting each team member into the maximum amount of meets possible. Note: when the required dives are lower difficulty, the more experienced divers may be asked to sit out to allow for others to have the opportunity.
  • Can my child be a swimmer and diver? Yes!
  • If my child is a swimmer and diver but the practice time overlaps, how will they do both? The coaches will work together to split the time so the athlete gets to participate in both practices.
  • What should I do if my child starts to fear a specific dive? Talk to one of the coaches. Diving can be a very mental and emotional sport so it is best to be understanding and let your child and their coach work through it together. This is a normal behavior and it takes a good deal of support to help each child work through the “mental block”/fear
  • What is the requirement for my child to dive in Championships at the end of the season? As with the regular season meets, there is requirements to qualify for championships. The championship meet has a list of required dives per level. Your child must be able to perform them all to participate.
  • Why is my child doing an easier dive if they know how to do more advanced skills? Each dive is judged on skill difficulty and accuracy. Sometimes the coach will request the athlete do a less difficult dive with better execution to improve their overall score. They may also do the opposite, a higher level of difficulty but not accurately performed to improve the overall score for the diver. The coaches will get to know your children and how they perform and will use that to determine which dives will allow each diver the best success. There is a lot of planning behind the scenes logistically, so please be understanding.
  • What does it mean if my child is diving exhibition? With a limited number of divers allowed in each meet, there is an opportunity to have divers listed as “unofficial”/exhibition. This does not individually have an effect on the diver but will not allow their scores to be used in the overall team meet score. (Example: If an exhibition/unofficial diver is in 3rd place overall, the points can not be awarded to that diver. The points would be awarded to the next “official” diver)

Again, if you have any questions please feel free to reach out.

I look forward to a fantastic season with all of you!

Go TST!!
