Thank you to all of the volunteers, officials, coaches, parents and swimmers for helping to make our 40th Championship meet an overall success! We will always have areas that we need to improve. One of my mentors has said that if we run a meet without opportunities for improvement, we can retire; which has not happened yet.
Here are a few items that need to be reviewed:
- Alcohol at Dual Meets - We continue to hear about visiting teams bringing alcohol to various clubs and home teams disregarding the rules. We must reiterate to everyone participating in the League that alcohol is not permitted on the competitive pool deck during dual meets! This includes private clubs, country clubs, and city pools. Some pools have rules that are more strict, which is fine. Anyone volunteering (timers, officials, scoring personnel, etc.) should refrain from alcohol during the meet!
- Alcohol at Championships - Miami University staff reported that a team was "tailgating" before and/or during the meet on Friday at Miami University and police responded. Unbelievable! We have 13 teams in the league and one team's actions reflect on the entire league. We will be adding to the Championship rules that "Miami University prohibits alcohol on the campus".
- Deck Access - We moved to wrist bands this year. It seemed to work well. We know some swimmers and "coaches" accessed the pool deck from the Wet Classroom door when the caterer was delivering food. The gate will now be locked at all times by Miami. Some teams had 8 and 10 coaches listed on the coach list, but easily had 15-20 older swimmers on deck during the Saturday sessions. Miami controls deck access for multiple reasons. One being safety!
- Officials - We need more officials! Start talking to the parents of younger swimmers. It's an easy way to help your team. More than a few teams notified us that visiting teams and even home teams said they had no officials an hour before the meet. That puts a huge burden on the other team. Frankly, it's not fair to any of the available officials. No officials, no meet - simple.
