Porpoise Swim Team General Information

Website:  www.swimnapy.com

Email: swimnapy@ymcachicago.org

The YMCA Porpoise Swim Team provides a fun, family program which promotes the development of good sportsmanship and self-confidence while improving swimming skills. The flexibility of our program encourages the child to balance swimming with other sports, family and school responsibilities.

Our team website is www.swimnapy.com.  At the beginning of the season, after your Y membership and team registration has been processed by the Y, you will receive an email with log in information to access your account on the website.  You will register for all of the YMCA meets that you choose to attend on the website, as well as find important news information for the team.  All team communication is done through email.  Please make sure that the email you provide with your registration is the one that you prefer to be contacted with and that you will check regularly.

Porpoises offer all levels of competitive swimming for children 6-years old to 18-years of age. The team is a YMCA swim team, and will participate in several local YMCA closed, dual, and individual meets and one inter-squad meet (Time Trial). ISI (Illinois Swimming Incorporated-a USAS local chapter) participation is an optional supplement, and offers advanced swimmers additional opportunities for meets. For ISI swimmers, there is an additional $75 ISI registration fee, as well as the cost of ISI meet entries ( Illinois Athlete registration). All Swim Team members must be Naperville YMCA members, as per the YMCA of the USA National rules.

The team has five (6) levels: Novice, Intermediate, Cadet, Advanced, Gold, and High School. If a swimmer is already on a high school swim team, they may be on Porpoises during their non-high school season. High school swimmers will pay a prorated team fee.

Novice and Intermediate swimmers can choose from 1, 2, or 3 days of practice per week. Cadet, Advanced, Gold & High School swimmers will swim a minimum of 2-days per week. Swimmers may only attend on the practice days for which they are registered.  There are no make ups for missed practices.

High School swimmers: A minimum of 2 Y meets, as well as Districts and State (for those that qualify), is required. Novice, Intermediate, Cadet and Advanced swimmers must participate in 3 Y meets as well as Districts and State (for those that qualify). ISI participation is encouraged for Advanced swimmers and up.

While there is a strong "swim and be fit" component to swim team, the goal is to improve technique and efficiency. Like the proper swing technique in baseball, swimming needs instruction, then endless practice to perfect the skill, making it a habit. We teach pool safety, racing starts, proper stroke technique, turns, finishes, and sportsmanship. We develop confidence in the water, determination, and self confidence.

Late registration for the team will not be prorated.  All withdrawals lose the $100 registration fee. Withdrawals after Sept. 5th will be prorated. There will be no refunds after October 1st, without a documented medical excuse.

USAS (ISI) Registration (optional)

If you want your swimmer to take advantage of more meets, harder competition, and a broader range of events, then you might want to sign your swimmer up for the USAS (ISI) swimming. Go to our website for a copy of the ISI form to be filled out. Make a Xerox of the filled out form for your records. Mail the form to the ISI office as shown on the form, along with a check made out to ISI.  All swimmers will need a recommendation from the Head Coach Prior to ISI sign up. Cadet and Advanced swimmers are encouraged to think about participating in ISI.

The rule of thumb for ISI is: If you are no longer being challenged at Y meets, you may need to consider ISI.

If you finished in the top 8 at the NSC City meet, you may need ISI.

USAS swimming is an OPTION. It is not required. You may choose to swim only "Y" meets.
