Yes, some age groups fill, but all swimmers who registered on (or before for returning members) the new member registration day last year got a spot on the team.  We will begin a waitlist for filled age groups, and will notify you by mid-September if a spot becomes available.

  1. How do I register?

There are two steps for registration, which are both completed ONLINE.

Step 1: Register online by clicking the Register Now button on the Home page.  Fill out all required information and pay your Activity fee of $110 and USS registration fee of $76.

Step 2: Click link in your confirmation page to pay your BBD Team fees and the YMCA membership fees.

Please contact the Birmingham YMCA for specific costs for your swimmer (248)644-9036.

*Your spot on the team is not reserved until you complete BOTH steps of the registration.*

  1. Where and when are practices?

To get an idea of practice times and locations, please look at last year’s schedule.  The times and locations should remain pretty consistent with what is listed there.

9-10 and 11-12 boys and girls have separate practices on some days of the week b/c the Derby pool is smaller than the Cranbrook pool.

*Throughout the season, there are practice changes due to middle school and high school swim meets.  We try to update the website at least a week in advance to reflect those changes so it is important to check the practice webpage frequently throughout each week.  We also send out Remind 101 text alerts if there are last minute changes/pool closures.

  1. How do I determine what group my swimmer is in?

Swimmers register and swim the entire season according to their age as of 12/1/18.

       Examples:

*John is 8 at registration time and turns 9 on 11/15/18.  He will register as a 9-10 and swim/practice with the 9-10s the entire season.

*Jen is 10 and turns 11 on 12/15/18.  She will register as a 9-10 and swim/practice with the 9-10s the entire season even though she turns 11 midway through the season.

  1. Is there an attendance policy?

While BBD does not have a set minimum number of practices a swimmer must attend, coaches recommend that 8&U and 9-10 attend a minimum of 3 practices per week, and 11 & Ups attend 4-6 practices per week for optimal performance and improvement.

  1. Do you have tryouts?

BBD does not have tryouts.

8 & Unders should be able to swim 1 length unassisted back and free. They do not need to be legal in fly and breast. Practices are 1 hour long and are offered 6 days per week.  The Y does offer a novice swim team that is not related to BBD and is for those not ready for a full swim team commitment. If you want information on that, please contact the Y.

9 & Ups are expected to be able to swim all 4 strokes legally.  Practices are 1.5 - 2 hours long depending on age group.

Within each practice, the coaches will place swimmers of similar ability together.
