Tryouts for swimmers wishing to join the DSMY Marlins or Marlin Prep (pre swim team) will be offered on the following dates:

*Due to limited staffing and pool space Friday practice will be all groups in the pool at once and is First Come, First Served. Sign up will be launched weekly (Monday) on Team Unify under "Events" chose the Waukee Friday practice. Make sure you sign up by Thursday at midnight in the correct practice group.
Spring/Summer season starts April 4th and continues through mid-July. Returning swimmers will also have a May start option. Practice times will be posted as soon as they are finalized. June/July practices may have a daytime or earlier option.
No practice on April 15, May 6, May 13, May 30, June 10, or July 4.
Summer swim will end on the last scheduled practice before each swimmers’ Championship meet.

*Multi-Swimmer Discounts are available at the Practice Site locations when registering all family members at the same time. 10% discount for two swimmers, 15% discount for three swimmers and 20% discount for four or more swimmers in the family. (Discount does not apply to or with Travel Team swimmers.) Additionally, the YMCA offers financial assistance to those in need. Contact your practice site Welcome Center for information.
Marlin Prep
Marlin Prep is a transitional pre-swim team program bridging the gap from swim lessons to our competitive swim team. Marlin Prep, designed for ages 5-14, runs concurrently with DSMY Marlin swim teams and is offered three months at a time with the goal of joining the swim team. All swimmers will be evaluated during tryout to determine safety in the water by swimming 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke, and may be referred to swim lessons. Our goal is to determine swim team readiness. We will cover the following:
- Short course (25 yard) emphasis
- Stroke technique & kicking based
- Fine tune freestyle and backstroke, master side breathing
- Introduction to breaststroke and butterfly
- Introduction to flip turns and racing starts
- Understanding of swimming language and practice etiquette
Financial Assistance
The YMCA of Greater Des Moines offers financial assistance to families making under $50,000 annually.
