What Goes On During The Season?

For Parents: All new parents and returning parents whose children are moving up from pre-team to "B" should attend the parents' meeting in the Saddle Ridge Community Center - date to be announced

No, swim team is NOT just for the kids - the parents are full participants as well. Your first job is to help get your kids to practice and to meets and other events - a calendar will be provided to you and reminders sent out via e-mail. But just as important as getting your kids to the events, is your participation in the team events.

The Screamin' Geese Swim Team is run on all volunteer power - all competition is officiated by parent volunteers, our concession stand is run by parent volunteers, and all team activities are organized by parent volunteers.

It is a great opportunity to show your child how much you value their hard work in the pool by participating in the success of the team as a parent volunteer.

The specific jobs are described on the Volunteer Opportunities page.

Practices: All practices are held at the outdoor pool at 300 Saddle Ridge Circle on Mondays through Fridays. Practice starts on the Tuesday after Memorial Day.

Until Montgomery County Schools close for the summer, the Geese practice in the afternoons only, Monday through Friday.

After the Montgomery County Schools close for the summer, the Geese practice both morning and afternoons (on non meet days) Monday - Friday.  Refer to the team calendar for specific practice times for age groups.  We encourage swimmers to attend the morning practice when the pool is reserved for swim team use.

The coaching staff will initially classify swimmers into groups for practice by age.  If you have a time conflict, please discuss this directly with the head coach.  Swimmers should expect to attend practice at the following times, according to their assigned group:

There is variation of ability and age within each practice group, with faster and slower lane groups within each practice time, so if you cannot practice at the time generally assigned to your group, please contact the coaching staff regarding a change of practice session.

Any swimmer, regardless of practice group assignment, who cannot attend the morning practice due to camp or work schedules is invited to the evening practice. Please refer to the "Team Structure" section to learn more about the A & B swimmer classifications

You should pick a practice time that is convenient for your family, but all swimmers are expected to attend one practice a day for the season.

Time Trial: A Time Trial is our warm-up meet for the season - a dry run, if you will. We don't compete against other teams, but we run the meet just like an official meet so everyone - parents, coaches, swimmers, and our community, will know how a real meet works.

It is called a "time trial" because swimmers establish a base-line time in each event they swim that day. Those times will help our coaches formulate our A-Meet and B-Meet line-ups.

We will hold our Time Trial on June 6 at 9:00 a.m. (arrive by 8:15). Pre-Team does not participate in the Time Trial. This is a great time to learn about being a Parent Volunteer Official

Scheduling - Is My Child Swimming This Week?: Our coaching staff will communicate via poster at the pool and e-mail as to which swimmers are scheduled to swim in each weekly A-Meet. B-Meets are less formal, but generally speaking, if your child can come to the B-Meet, he or she will swim.

Meets: Please refer to our Swim Team Team Calendar.

"A" Meets: Begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday mornings. For home meets, all swimmers & parents arrive at our pool at 7:45 a.m. to set up and prepare for the meet. For away meets, all swimmers arrive at our pool at approximately 7:45 a.m. to caravan to meet location. If not joining in caravan, swimmers should arrive at host pool for away meets no later than 8:15 a.m. Meets last approximately 2 hours

"B" Meets: Begin at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday evenings. For home meets, all swimmers & parents arrive at our pool at 5:15 p.m. to set up and prepare for the meet. For away meets, all swimmers arrive at our pool at approximately 5:00 p.m. to caravan to meet location. If not joining in caravan, swimmers should arrive at host pool for away meets no later than 5:30 p.m. Meets last approximately 2½ hours.

Non-Meet Events: The Screamin' Geese enjoy a lot of out-of-the-water events during the summer to keep our team cohesive. These include Spirit Activities for swimmers such as tie-dying, rock-climbing, laser-tag & movies. We also have weekly Friday night Pep Rallies to psych up the swimmers for their next morning's meet. In addition, we sponsor a number of Adult Socials to give our great parents some time to relax and enjoy each other's company. Finally, we cater the King Farm 4th of July neighborhood picnic.

Team Banquet: We celebrate our team's successes with a year-end awards banquet, at which all family members are welcome. All swimmers receive various awards, both formal and informal, for the season's accomplishments. The banquet date and location will be determined at a later time.

Keeping Track Of It All: Not to worry, you will receive e-mail reminders and can visit our calendar to remind you about the who, what, when and where!"
