Scheduled tryouts

Scheduled tryouts are offered at times when the club does not offer open tryouts.

To schedule an appointment, contact LAMVAC at MembershipEagle@lamvac.org for Eagle Park Pool or MembershipFoothill@lamvac.org for Foothill College Pool, depending on which of the pools your swimmer would prefer.

The club offers scheduled tryouts at both swim-year pools:

Please approach the coaches when you arrive at the pool and notify them that you are there for a tryout.

If you would like to come to a tryout at the Foothill College Pool and expect that your child will place into Tadpole swim lessons, the club will schedule you on Tuesday or Thursday, when Tadpole lessons are offered, so that you can observe the coach-student interactions for the group.

Open tryouts

Open tryouts take place for one week in late August/early September and one week in late May/early June, 4-5:45 p.m. You can go to the pool any time during open-tryout hours.

Check the calendar on the LAMVAC website for the exact days and location.

Parent volunteers will meet you at the pool and answer questions you have about the team.

There is no need to notify LAMVAC members that you will be showing up for an open tryout. But you are welcome to email the membership coordinators with questions at MembershipEagle@lamvac.org or MembershipFoothill@lamvac.org, depending on which of those pools you would prefer to use.

Description of tryouts

Parents must be present during tryouts and must sign a tryout form, which acts as a waiver.

Here is what to expect:

  • Swimmers spend five to 10 minutes in the water. The start time depends on coach availability.
  • Swimmers should come to the pool ready to swim, which means having their suits on, their goggles adjusted and their towels handy.
  • Swimmers should be able to enter the pool without assistance and swim at least 25 meters. They should be able to float on their backs and swim at least partially across the pool using the freestyle stroke.
  • A member of the coaching staff will assign swimmers to a practice group at the end of the tryout. Coaches consider both the physical and mental readiness of each swimmer in making their determination.

For Eagle Park Pool, please park in the free parking lot on Church Street, across from Oak Street, or find street parking. You should enter the gate to the pool that is closest to this parking lot. (Ignore the sign directing swimmers to the official front of the pool.)

For Foothill College Pool, use this campus map. Please take the Perimeter Road and follow the signs to the pool. (Perimeter Road circles the entire campus in a counter-clockwise direction; the driveway to the pool is about a third of a way around campus.) Drive up the hill and park in Parking Lot 2A. Please pay at the parking machine in the lot ($3, credit cards accepted). Be advised that Foothill College police do ticket.

While you’re there, pick up a handout, available at the pool, which provides information important to new members. The information is also on the LAMVAC website under the Join the Team menu tab.
