Meet Our Skaters (under construction)

 

Skater name: Carpenter aka Pantie Drop-her
How long have you been playing derby? 6 years in October
Have you always skated with Lava City? Yes
When did you learn how to skate? Skating was the only exercise my mom could get me to do when I was little. 
What are some of your favorite things about roller derby? The inclusiveness. It doesn't matter where you are in life, as long as you are a decent person there is a place for you in derby. It is truly a family. 
What team(s) do you play for? Smokin' Ashes, and Spitfires 
Have you ever been injured? Um, Shhhhhh, not answering that. I'll just say cross training and calcium are very important when playing full contact sports. 
What do you like to do when you're not playing derby? Well with my husband and 2 of the kids also in derby, if we aren't playing, we are talking or watching derby, or skating around town. Outside of derby I like hanging out w/ the family, hiking, floating the river, yoga, watching movies, cooking, or doing crafts.

What's some advice you would give to someone that may be interested in joining Lava City? It's not scary! Everyone is super nice. I have gained so much self confidence and self love because of the supportive men and women involved in Lava City. 

Anything else you'd like to add: Icky and I coach the juniors. So sign up the kiddos, boys and girls!! Everyone needs to be involved in derby and there is a place for everyone!!!

 

Skater name:  Physical Terrorist (PT)
How long have you been playing derby? 5.5 years. 
Have you always skated with Lava City? No, first 4 years with Peninsula Roller Girls in California. 
When did you learn how to skate? Junior High School but didn't skate for about 15 years before I started derby. 
What are some of your favorite things about roller derby? THE COMMUNITY!! For sure, 100% the best part!
What team(s) do you play for? Smokin' Ashes and SpitFires. 
Have you ever been injured? yes, but let's not talk about that...........
What do you like to do when you're not playing derby? Barre3, yoga, hiking, floating the river, stand-up paddle boarding. 
What's some advice you would give to someone that may be interested in joining Lava City? Just get out there and try it. We are a great group of girls with a strong community and you should join us! Don't get discouraged if you feel like you don't fit in right away, it will happen. 

 

 

Skater name: Mudslinger #83

How long have you been playing derby? Almost 7yrs

Have you always skated with Lava City? Yep proudly

When did you learn how to skate? In my innocent youth. Mom dropped us hooligans off every Friday night for open skate.

What are some of your favorite things about roller derby? The love and support from the derby community. It's a tribe of amazing people. There is a job and place for everyone! No body types or stereotypes, everyone is welcome with open arms.

What team(s) do you play for? The Smokin Ashes, SpitFires and Moulin Bruise

Have you ever been injured? Oh heck yeah! Broken nose, torn rotator cuff, broken foot, bumps, bruise, torn muscles the list goes on!

What do you like to do when you're not playing derby?

Be a mom to two rad hooligans!

What's some advice you would give to someone that may be interested in joining Lava City? You will never regret the things you learn from derby. Builds you to be a better person.  I learned to love myself. Dig deeper and try hard. It trickles over into your daily life, it's an amazing thing! Be a part of a community.

 

Skater name: s'No Angel

How long have you been playing derby? Since Jan 2011

Have you always skated with Lava City? Yes

When did you learn how to skate? As a kid. I actually skated every weekend of 7th grade at Midtown (when it was a rink).

What are some of your favorite things about roller derby? The community, the work out and the a positive outlet for women.

What team(s) do you play for? Moulin Bruise since 2011 and 1/2 season for Smokin' Ashes

Have you ever been injured? Yes, knees are so fickle (good knee pads are key).

What do you like to do when you're not playing roller derby? Cuddle my sweet Chiweenie 'Skipper', all the great outdoor stuff Bend has to offer, festivals, Snowboard and spend time with my family.

 

What's some advice you would give to someone that may be interested in joining Lava City? You won't know if you don't try. If nothing else, you'll get a great work out and make lifelong friends.

 

 

 

Skater name: Cut Throat Callie

How long have you been playing derby? Six years in October.

Have you always skated with Lava City? Yes

When did you learn how to skate? When I was 6, but didn't learn to play derby until I was 30.

What are some of your favorite things about roller derby? That I get to do something I love with my daughter.  I love that we are a family and we take care of each other. It's the biggest support system, not only for me but my family too.  I love that I have an outlet to be silly and competitive at the same time. 

What team(s) do you play for? The Smokin’ Ashes and Nerve agents.

Have you ever been injured? Yes, I split my chin open and got six stiches.

What do you like to do when you're not playing derby? I enjoy spending time with my family and watching my daughter in her many other activities. I also enjoy going on adventures with my love. 

What's some advice you would give to someone that may be interested in joining Lava City? Don't be intimidated, you can start at any age and any skill level.

We can teach you to skate, everyone sucks when they start. When I first started I ran in to walls and couldn't stop for months.

Anything else you'd like to add: If you are looking to find yourself again, need an automatic family and support system, want to get back in to shape or are just looking for an outlet, Derby is for you!

How long have you been playing derby? 11 years

Have you always skated with Lava City? Yes

When did you learn how to skate? When I was a kid at friends birthday parties

What are some of your favorite things about roller derby? It's a fun way to exercise. The skaters are great and I love competition

What team(s) do you play for? Smokin Ashes

Have you ever been injured? Yes. I broke my leg and have had several more minor injuries as well

What do you like to do when you're not playing derby? Hike, camp, snowboard. I like to be outside.

What's some advice you would give to someone that may be interested in joining Lava City? Even if your scared or nervous do it, you won't regret it!!!

How long have you been playing derby? 6 years

Have you always skated with Lava City? Yes

When did you learn how to skate? When I was 6 or 7 I suppose. I don’t really remember.

What are some of your favorite things about roller derby? The community, fitness and knocking skaters down.

What team(s) do you play for? Smokin’ Ashes, Spit Fires, Nerve Agents

Have you ever been injured? Concussions and sprained wrist, nothing to serious.

What do you like to do when you're not playing derby? Paddle, camp, rock climb, snowboard, ski, hike… anything outside.

What's some advice you would give to someone that may be interested in joining Lava City? JUST DO IT! Nike had it right. We are not really intimidating, we love teaching new skaters, you’ll love the community and never look back!
