It is the responsibility of swimmers and parents to check the website and their e-mail daily to stay abreast of any changes.

Group Descriptions

The descriptions below are provided as guidelines, not hard and fast rules. Movement from one group to another is at the coach’s discretion. Many factors are considered when making placement changes.


Red Group

Swimmers are typically between the ages of 6 and 10 years old and must be able to demonstrate an efficient freestyle and backstroke, as well as a basic level of knowledge and ability in the other strokes.  This group will focus on the technical skills required to be proficient in each stroke, including starts and finishes.

Goal:  Master basics of all four strokes, including starts and finishes; Advancement to White Group

Season:  First day of practice through final Championship meet (typically last week of January or first week in February)

Practice Schedule:  Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 6:00 PM-7:00 PM

Attendance:  Recommend 2 practices per week (preferably Monday and Wednesday)

Equipment:  Cap, Goggles, Competition Style Swimsuit


White Group

Swimmers in this group should show proficiency in all four strokes and have at least one year of competitive swim experience.  Swimmers are typically between the ages of 8 and 10 years old. The goals of their training are stroke efficiency through technical skill building, and the execution of proficient starts, turns, finishes, and relay take offs. Swimmers in this group, though focused on technique, will also employ the skills needed for more advanced training.

Goal:  Advancement to Black Group

Season:  First day of practice through final Championship meet (typically last week of January or first week in February)

Practice Schedule:  Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 6:00 PM-7:00 PM

Attendance:  Recommend 2-3 practices per week (preferably Monday and Wednesday)

Equipment:  Cap, Goggles, Competition Style Swimsuit


Black Group

Swimmers are typically between the ages of 9 and 11 years old.  They show proficiency in all four strokes. All swimmers should be able to legally race 50 yards in all four strokes and the 100 IM, including turns. Swimmers in this group should be able to self-correct strokes based on coaches’ feedback. The group's focus will be on: improving endurance and efficiency through targeted training sets and performing enhanced drill sessions. 

Goal:  Advancement to Gold Group in future winter seasons

Season:  First day of practice through final Championship meet (typically last week of January or first week in February)

Practice Schedule:  Monday - Thursday 6:00 PM-7:15 PM; Friday 6:00 PM-7:00 PM

Attendance:  Recommend 3-4 practices per week

Equipment:  Cap, Goggles, Competition Style Swimsuit


Silver Group

Swimmers are typically between the ages of 10 and 11 years old and have significant competitive experience.  Practices will focus on technique related to strokes, starts, turns, and finishes.  As well, this group will work on improving endurance through intervals in order to maintain and fully complete age appropriate timed sets.  The workout plans for these swimmers will include advanced drill sets and more extensive conditioning and age appropriate yardage. 

Goal:  Advancement to Gold Group in future winter seasons

Season:  First day of practice through final Championship meet (typically last week of January or first week in February)

Practice Schedule:  Monday - Thursday 7:15 PM-8:30 PM; Friday 6:00 PM-7:00 PM

Attendance:  Recommend 3-4 practices per week

Equipment:  Cap, Goggles, Competition Style Swimsuit


Gold Group

Swimmers are typically between the ages of 11 and 14 years old and have significant competitive experience.  Practices will focus on technique related to strokes, starts, turns, and finishes.  As well, this group will work on improving endurance through intervals in order to maintain and fully complete age appropriate timed sets.  The workout plans for these swimmers will include advanced drill sets and more extensive conditioning and age appropriate yardage. 

Goal:  Advance to High School Swim Team

Season:  First day of practice through final Championship meet (typically last week of January or first week in February) 

Practice Schedule:  Monday - Thursday 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM; Friday 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Attendance:  Recommend 4-5 practices per week

Equipment:  Cap, Goggles, Competition Suit
