Swim Seasons

There are three sessions per swimming year: Fall/Winter, Spring, and Summer. The main competitive session is Fall/Winter; the other two sessions provide slightly less opportunities for competition. The details of the sessions are subject to change, but are listed to give a general idea of what to expect.

Fall/Winter (September-March) Short Course season (SCY)
Instruction: This session encompasses all aspects of competitive swimming.
Length: Typically begins early September and ends early to mid March.
Times: Practices will be held late afternoon and evening. Mid-Fall and winter practice is shifted to accommodate the high school swim team practices and meets. Always check the practice schedule, as practices are subject to change.
Meets: Coaches encourage all swimmers to enter the many types of USA Swimming meets offered during these months. The meet schedule is posted on this web site. Meets are held at pools that are 25 yards in length.

Spring (April – May) Long Course season (LCM)
Instruction: This session encompasses continued stroke techique and endurance,  and dryland training.
Length: Begins in early April and ends in late May.
Times: Levels are scheduled in the afternoon hours and extend into the evening. Please check the practice schedule, as practice times are subject to change.
Meets: USA Swimming meets are encouraged but not emphasized. Meets are held at pools that are 50 meters in length.

Summer (May – August) Long Course season (LCM)
Instruction: Long-course swimming is emphasized as well as sroke technique and endurance. Practice sites depend on the different groups. For example, Junior and Senior groups often practice at Olympic Swim and Health (Penn Hills) while the Pre-Competition and Developmental groups practice at Fox Chapel High School pool.
Length: Typically starts May/June and ends early August.
Times: Practice times are in the morning. Please check the practice schedule, as practices are subject to change.
Meets: Long-course USA Swimming meet entries are encouraged. Meets are held at pools that are 50 meters in length.
