Swimming in the AMS is designed around an "age group" concept. Age groups are determined by the swimmer's birth date.
Swimmers compete against swimmers of their age and ability level. The age groups consist of 8 and under ("Mini" swimmers), 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, and 15-and-up ("Senior" swimmers).
- Individual Medley (IM - combines all four strokes)
USS meets are divided into different letter classifications, based on swimming times. The ability classes go up from B, BB, A, AA, AAA to AAAA.
These swimming times and ability classes are published yearly on the USS Time Standard, and are adjusted from time to time as National Top 16 rankings fluctuate.
Comparing your swimmer’s time with the USS Time Standard will help determine swim meet qualification (e.g., “B” vs. “BB” meets). Feel free to ask the coaches for input and clarification.
More meet information can be found on the AMS website.
