SQUAD STRUCTURE & EXPECTATIONS

There are always exceptions to every rule. Ultimately the coaching staff will make decisions for move ups with the following guidelines as a general framework. Coaches will also consider the athletes maturity level (physical and mental) and team commitment level when considering move ups.

PLEASE NOTE: Although there are suggested ratios in terms of conditioning vs technique instruction for some squads, we at the NWAA Sharks will ALWAYS be a technique focused organization!!!


 

NATIONAL TEAM

Monthly dues for this group are $110.00 a month.

Swimmer must have one AAA time and/or one Zone/Sectional/Jnr National time, one 500 free A time and maintain 90% punctual practice attendance.

  • Additionally, National Team members MUST attend ALL Championship meets qualified for INCLUDING the ASI State Meet.
  • Continuous and on-going evaluation of practice attendance (90%), ability to follow instructions, attitude, work ethic, practice effort levels, dedication, coachability, meet attendance and morning practice attendance (90%).
  • National Team Squad members must consider swimming to be their preferred sport of choice.  No facets of the Squad’s swimming program may be missed due to participation in other sports.

Injured swimmers (Nat’l Dev. & Nat’l Team) will not be allowed to attend practice so that their injury can be seen to by a medical professional.  Once the athlete has been cleared to resume workouts they may return to practices.

National Team Objectives:

  • Continue an emphasis on technique

  • Strong dedication and motivation

  • Expectations of maturity and responsibility at the highest level

  • Attendance of morning practice sessions

  • Maintain a strict attendance requirement of 90%

  • Attend all competitions as designated by the coach

  • Represent Northwest Arkansas Aquatics with maturity and good sportsmanship

  • Train and compete at a VERY HIGH level

  • Strive towards reaching their fullest potential in swimming

  • Set an example as to what it means to be an Elite member on Northwest Arkansas Aquatics

National Team Philosophy:

The National Team is all about being fully committed to the sport of swimming!

  • Athletes in this squad will be held to the highest standard of excellence at all times and all athletes realize that merely showing up to practice is not enough. The amount of effort given within each practice is as important as showing up. Athletes will attend every meet possible and attend every practice possible. Once in the National Team, athletes must maintain a 90% punctual practice attendance as well as show the highest level of dedication and commitment to the sport of competitive swimming.

  • Any athlete unable to maintain or strive towards the above objectives for the National Team, may be moved into another squad at any time, at the coach’s discretion. The National Team will be held to the highest standard, as this group is the most visible and elite squad of NWAA. Athletes who are willing to commit to this level of training are in this sport to be serious about their swimming. 


 

NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT TEAM

Monthly dues for this group are $110.00 a month.

Swimmer must have one AA time and/or one Zone/Sectional/Jnr National time, one 500 free A time and maintain 90% punctual practice attendance.

  • Additionally, National Development Squad members MUST attend ALL Championship meets qualified for including the ASI State Meet.
  • Participation in other sports will be allowed but is not advised.

Injured swimmers (Nat’l Dev. & Nat’l Team) will not be allowed to attend practice so that their injury can be seen to by a medical professional.  Once the athlete has been cleared to resume workouts they may return to practices.

Continue an emphasis on technique

Strong dedication and motivation

Attendance of morning practice sessions (mandatory)

Maintain a strict attendance requirement of 90%

Attend all competitions as designated by the coach

Represent Northwest Arkansas Aquatics with maturity and good sportsmanship

Start training and competing at a progressively higher HIGH level

Strive towards reaching their fullest potential in swimming

Set an example as to what it means to be an upper tier member on Northwest Arkansas Aquatics

National Development Team Philosophy:

​The National Development Team is all about starting to become fully committed to the sport of swimming! Athletes in this squad will be held to a high standard of excellence at all times. Athletes will need to attend every meet possible. Once in the National Development Squad, athletes must maintain a 90% punctual practice attendance as well as show a high level of dedication and commitment to the sport of competitive swimming.

Any athlete unable to maintain or strive towards the above objectives for the National Team, may be moved into another squad at any time, at the coach’s discretion. 


 

MAKOS

Monthly dues for this group are $100.00 a month.

Swimmer must have one 500 freestyle A time, a legal 400 IM and maintain 80% punctual practice attendance. 

The Makos Squad will focus mostly on training concepts while continuing to improve stroke mechanics.

To be considered for a move up to the Makos Squad.

- Must complete 8 x 100’s freestyle @1:30

- Must complete 3 x 200’s IM @3:40

- Must complete 8 x 50’s freestyle kick (with board) @1:05

- Very consistent streamlines; must be able to make it past the flags underwater after every turn!

- Good Turns for all 4 strokes

- Read clock proficiently

- Need to have competed in 4 or more swim meets throughout the previous season

Makos Squad Objectives:

  • An increase in daily yardage

  • Start introducing an increase in dedication and motivation

  • Expectations of maturity and responsibility

  • Pursue attendance requirement of at least 90% but preferably more

  • Attend all competitions (especially Championship meets) designated by the coach

  • Represent Northwest Arkansas Aquatics with maturity and good sportsmanship

  • Continue the pursuit of training and competition at a higher level

  • Strive towards reaching their fullest potential in swimming

Makos Squad Philosophy 

Learn what commitment and dedication is required to be a part of the Makos Squad and work towards moving up. It is the goal of this group to provide older swimmers the opportunity to achieve a wide variety of goals. 


 

TIGER SHARKS

Monthly dues for this group are $85.00 a month.

Age Group swimmers who are able to complete a legal 200 IM & 500 freestyle plus have at least one A time.

The focus will be more technique (and stroke drill) intensive while starting to introduce training and practice ethics.

To be considered for a move up to the Tiger Shark Squad.

- 6 X 100’s Free @ 1:45

- 3 X 200 IM’s @ 4:00

- 6 x 50 Kick freestyle kick (with board) @ 1:10

- Very consistent streamlines

- Good Turns for all 4 strokes

- Read clock proficiently

- Know how to do both Backstroke and Forward starts 

Tiger Shark Objectives:

  • Continue an emphasis on technique and stroke drills

  • Athletes are still encouraged to participate in other activities

  • Attend all competitions as designated by the coach

  • Represent Northwest Arkansas Aquatics with Maturity and good Sportsmanship

  • 50% conditioning to 50% technique ratio

Tiger Sharks Philosophy

This squad is a training ground for swimmers who aspire to actively pursue swimming as a potential priority activity. Swimmers will focus mainly on technique & training in the pursuit of higher goals. Swimmers at this level should start considering their commitment to the NWAA swimming program and strive to become a part of our Makos Squad.


 

GREAT WHITE

Monthly dues for this group are $65.00 a month

This Group is designed for swimmers who are able to complete a legal 100 IM (have a 10 and under “B” time if under age 9) Swimmers will improve stroke techniques and learn basics of training concepts.​

To be considered for a move up to the Great White Squad.

- 3 X 100’s Free @:20 rest              

- 2 X 100 Back @:20 rest

- 2 X 100 Breast @:20 rest              

- 2 X 50 Fly @:20 rest

- 2 X 100 IM @:20 rest

- 6 X 50 freestyle kick @1:20

- Very consistent streamlines

- Good turns

Great White Objectives:

  • Continue a heavy emphasis on technique

  • Introduce concepts of improving physical conditioning as well as basic concepts in racing

    strategies

  • Training = 90% technique to 10% conditioning ratio

  • Number of expected competitions will increase

  • Learn proper stroke, start & turn technique.

  • Introduction to local area competitions.

  • Enjoy a fun learning environment.

  • Introduction to a competitive environment.

  • Introduction to basic stretching and dryland exercises.

  • Introduction to the values involved with being a member of Northwest Arkansas Aquatics, such as

    respect, responsibility, focus, competitiveness and confidence.

  • Move up to Tiger Sharks.

  • Learn proper swimming technique and have fun!

Great White Philosophy

Improve swimming technique, begin basic conditioning skills, increase level of competition and continue to emphasize having fun.


 

HAMMERHEADS

Monthly dues for this group are $60.00 a month

Participants should have knowledge of freestyle & backstroke. Swimmers will learn the basics of stroke technique and develop an appreciation and ideally learn to love the sport of swimming.

To be considered for the Hammerhead Squad.

- Must complete an unassisted 50yd freestyle.

- Must complete an unassisted 25yd backstroke.

- Demonstrate knowledge of breaststroke (kick and/or timing)

- Demonstrate knowledge of butterfly (kick and/or timing, recovery of arms over the water)

Hammerheads Objectives:

  • Emphasis on technique

  • Encouraged to participate in other activities.

  • Training = 100% technique emphasis

  • Attend 2-3 competitions each season.

  • Learn proper stroke, start & turn technique.

  • Introduction to local area competitions.

  • Enjoy a fun learning environment.

  • Introduction to a competitive environment.

  • Introduction to basic stretching.

  • Introduction to the values involved with being a member of Northwest Arkansas Aquatics, such as

    respect, responsibility, focus, competitiveness and confidence.
