SFA Open Water Team

Simon Fraser Aquatics (SFA) is proud to announce the beginning of the Simon Fraser Aquatics – Open Water Team. Open Water swimming was only introduced into the Olympics in 2008, making it a relatively new and exciting event that is growing in popularity. Open Water swimming can be beneficial for building endurance for any level of swimmer or triathlete.

SFA will be offering high level open water swim coaching to interested athletes in the lower mainland. This Open Water Team is designed to teach you the crucial basics of swimming open water and important race tactics. The SFA Coaching staff will ensure that athletes receive exceptional technical instruction and relevant pace training. The Team is split into 3 divisions: Elite, Intermediate, and Summer Swim.

Weekly regular lake swims will be available at Buntzen and Sasamat on Sunday and Monday evenings, as well as specialty events and races at various times and locations such as at Jericho Beach.

Every week, we will have a Thursday long course 50-meter pool training at Central Park Pool in Burnaby to work on pacing and stroke correction in a controlled pool setting. 

Coaching will be by SFA head coach Ryan Skomorowski and Open water head coach Adrian Vanderhelm

Elite
This division is reserved for athletes who are already at a high level of performance in either open water or Triathlon events or distance pool events. This division will focus on high quality open water swimming including lessons on overtaking, spotting, drafting, pacing, and many others.

Intermediate
This division is reserved for athletes who are looking to gain valuable experience open water swimming and potentially racing. This is a suitable division for someone who has pool swimming experience but is looking to improve their open water swimming and stroke technique substantially. 

This is also a great program for younger athletes who want to supplement their current training program to improve their freestyle endurance. We will teach the basics of open water swimming such as head position, body line, rotation, and the different phases of the freestyle stroke. The major focus will be on technique with some focus on pacing and racing tactics.

Summer Swim
This division is reserved for swimmers who swim with a registered a BCSSA Club. The purpose of this division is to expose young swimmers to open water opportunities and experience training in an aerobic environment geared towards longer races. This division will focus heavily on technique, endurance training, distance race strategy, and open water techniques.
