Competitive Squad

COMPETITIVE SQUAD

Our competitive program is designed for swimmers from approximately ages 6 through 17. Swimmers are  assigned to a training squad based on their skill level. Under the direction of their coaches, swimmers will focus on developing strong competitive swimming skills and techniques.

This program focuses on:

  • Developing and refining proper competitive swimming stroke techniques, starts and turns
  • Establishing and maintaining a high level of fitness
  • Improving strength, balance, co-ordination and general motor skills
  • Teaching and internalizing goal-oriented achievements through discipline, perseverance and dedication
  • Promoting teamwork and leadership skills
  • Swim WELL and swim FAST!

Practice length and schedule vary based on the level of the swimmer. Squad sizes vary from 8 to 25 swimmers depending on the level.


Prerequisites

  • Swimmer must be able to swim 25-50M of Freestyle (front crawl) & 25-50M Backstroke non- stop
  • Swimmer must be comfortable in deep water
  • Interest in competitive swimming is desirable
  • Based on coaches' discretion

Swimmer ability will be assessed through a formal evaluation during the first two weeks of the start of the season. Pool time will be based on age and ability of the swimmer to maintain an appropriate coach to swimmer ratio.


Training Schedule and Location

Throughout the season the club will train in the West Pool, Van Vliet Centre, University of Alberta.

Please note: Training times include both dry land and pool time - both of which the swimmer is expected to attend. Times are tentative, and subject to change.

*Dependent on swimmers participation in Regional swim meet and subsequent qualification for the Provincial Championship.

**Swimmers are not expected to attend every morning workout and every evening workout all week. During July and August the expectation regarding the number of sessions each swimmer is to attend per week is as follows:

Competitive Squad Registration Fees

Comp 1          $470 per swimmer (Subject to availability and placement

Comp 2 to 5   $550 per swimmer

Included in the Registration fee:

  • Swim meet entry fees
  • University of Alberta One Card (change room access card)- returning swimmers should bring their One Card from the 2017 season. HUMA does not cover the cost for a replacement card
  • Year End Banquet and Team awards night
  • New Competitive Swimmer: HUMA basic racing suit; HUMA T-shirt & HUMA silicone swim cap
  • Returning Competitive Swimmer: Optional HUMA basic racing suit (can be purchased at a 50% discount), Optional replacement HUMA T-shirt for $5 & HUMA silicone swim cap

If a Competitive swimmer is unable to meet the eligibility criteria within the first two weeks, registration will be returned, refunds will be issued (original fee less $100 administration fees) and the swimmer will be encouraged to enroll in Red Cross swim program. Meeting outlined eligibility standards and following the pool rules are essential for the safety of the swimmer as well as HUMA teammates.
