Last week we talked about body position and how gravity and buoyancy affect it. A supporting concept that we need to be aware of with respect to our body in water is BODY BALANCE. This refers to how our body is lying "on" and "in" the water. If you have good balance your head will be in a "neutral" position, with the back of your head resting just a bit above the line of your spine. Secondly, you need to be aware of how much time your arms are spending "ahead" or "behind" your centre of buoyancy. The more time you spend with your arms ahead of your centre of buoyancy, the more "positive" your body balance will be; alternately, the more time your arms spend behind your trunk, the more time you spend in a "negatively" balanced position. Thirdly, being aware of how you use the "air bags" (lungs) to influence your hip and leg position, the more you become aware of your body balance.
CONGRATULATIONS to Jake Armstrong, Vincent Cappa, Nathan Lethbridge and Robert Wise for their performances at Spring Nationals in Victoria. Jake finished 6th in the 50BR, Robert had a top finish of 12th in the 200FR, Nathan swam personal bests in each of his 3 events and had a top finish of 21st in the 50FL (from 37th), while Vincent was 2 out of 3 and placed 24th in the 400IM.
CONGRATULATIONS to first time Regional Qualifiers Cleo Murphy, Anicka Garg, and Alex Lobo.
The new WOSA Regional Champs qualifying times are now posted on our website.
HOLLANDIA INVITATIONAL – MAY 9 – 11
This meet takes place at WSRC (Western) and all LAC swimmers are invited to attend. This meet is now posted on the LAC website and is available for sign up.
INTRO TO PARA SWIMMING
On Friday nights, the Intro to Para Swimming group practices at the Stoney Creek YMCA from 6:00pm-7:00pm. We are currently looking for a volunteer who would be interested in coming out once a week to volunteer with the program, and provide both in and out of the water support/coaching to the participants. Anyone interested can contact Darda and Katelyn at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Congratulations to all of our officials, especially first time Meet Manager Fraser Gatt and Meet Referee Bonnie Marceau, for a very successful 2014 Pentathlon. We had 2 very full sessions and tried to accommodate as many participants as possible within each session! Thanks to Tim and the Canteen Crew for keeping the officials fed during the short break between sessions.
With the closure of CGAC we have relocated our timing and meet equipment - many thanks to David Cliche and his crew for disassembling the equipment and moving it from CGAC (to Western) in less than 3 hours after the Pentathlon!
Some people have expressed an interest in learning more about meet management on a one on one basis. We still need more people to step up if we want to host our usual meets next season. I am happy to meet with people on their own schedule to introduce them to what the meet manager's job is all about. If you are willing to show more support for the team and increase your level of participation with LAC, this is a great way to make a very important contribution. Send me an email and we will get together.
LAC is hosting the 2014 Eastern Canadian Tri Competition at Western University on April 19th. We are still in need of Stroke and Turn judges and Senior Officials for this meet. Please sign up using your OSOA account or contact me via email. Sign-ups for minor officials are open now on the LAC web site. The Hollandia Invitational is May 9-11. You can sign up for senior official positions using your OSOA.CA account now.
If anyone has any questions about anything officiating related, please do not hesitate to contact me.
