Newsletter 2013-14 Issue 38
Thurs Jun 26 Senior Gold 3:00 – 5:00 pm THAMES
Fri June 27 Age Group Gold/Silver 5:00 – 6:30 pm THAMES
The June and July schedules are posted on the LAC website. All schedules are subject to change based on pool availability.
CONGRATULATIONS to our 44 swimmers for some great swimming at the Regional Championships. LAC placed 5th overall, with an excellent best time conversion rate of 70% and 7 swimmers achieving 100% pb's - way to go Nick Bennett, Madison Brewer, Katie Callon, Mohamed El Tatawy, Hannah Fenn, Katia Langham and Clara MacNeil. 8 swimmers collected a total of 19 individual medals (1G-7S-11B) and our 10&U girls relay teams placed 1st and 2nd. For a complete list of medalists see the "What's New" section of the website. There was plenty of visible improvement in swimming technique, starting and turning, and lots of smiling. It's always important to remember, and the coaches cannot stress enough, that at the 12&under level we are after skill development first - personal bests, medals, ribbons and qualifying times all follow from that. It is our hope that as many 12&under LAC'ers as possible graduate from the program as 17 and 18 year olds, having been guided through a comprehensive program that over the course of a swimming career develops all areas in a timely and age relevant fashion: skill, stamina, speed, strength, and suppleness. It's great to have tough yet realistic goals, but it's equally important to learn how to handle the inevitable disappointments that come along the way. Remember, it does not need to be a best time or a qualifying time to be a good swim. Persistence and perspective will help you go a long way in this great sport.
CONGRATULATIONS to first time Provincial qualifier Carter Buck.
PAUL HAUCH MEET – JULY 11 – 13
To all swim families!
The Paul Hauch meet is fast approaching and we need to start collecting bell heat prizes!
Each swim family (1st year families included!) need to donate a prize(s) worth $10 for this meet. The more the merrier! More prizes mean more winners!
Certain heats throughout the meet will hear a bell at the start and the winner of these heats pick a great prize! This gives all the swimmers a chance to win something and they love it!!
Ideas for prizes include gift cards, towels, water bottles, flip flops, candy, etc!
Please drop off prizes to us (Anthony & Mimi Prier-age group orange) or any coaches and they will get it to us.
Feel free to email or text me with any questions.
Mimi Prier email@example.com (519)777-1593
Sign-ups for the meet are now open. For those of you not familiar with the meet, it is a lot of fun and the place to be is actually timing where the tents provide some shade. Remember that friends and family can help with timing (must be at least 14 years old). Also, remember the younger swimmers are in the morning and the older swimmers in the afternoon for this meet.
We are also looking for senior officials for the Hauch meet.
If you would like to try a position and get some experience to help you move up the ladder. Support can be provided so you aren't on your own and have a chance to learn. We try to do this meet with our own officials.
For further information please call Alex VanderKam at 226-980-6404 or email at firstname.lastname@example.org or Fraser Gatt at 519-630-6181 or email email@example.com.
NOTES FROM THE TREASURER
Swimmer Account Payments
Swimmer statements for meets up to this past weekend will be sent out later this week. The statements will be sent by e-mail and included in the e-mail will be options for making payment. You can also give your cheque to one of Andrew, Donna, Cindy, Liz or Meggin and they will be sure to pass it along to me.
Amounts generally relate to meet entry fees but they also include misc. items and minor membership fee adjustments. General information on swimmer statements including payment options can be found by logging in to the website and looking under swimmer accounts. The entry summary tab includes details for meet fees (please note we do not currently use the website billing system).
As always, feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions about the postings on your account. For any questions requiring more than a simple e-mail, please see me at the pool or e-mail me so we can make arrangements to speak over the phone.
The AGM will be held next Monday, June 23, 2014 beginning at 7.30 pm at the Medway (Ray Lanctin) Arena in the upper level meeting room. Attendance is not mandatory; however, we encourage at least one member of each swim family to attend this very informative evening.
Further information including a copy of the Minutes from the 2013 AGM and a proxy for 2014 will be posted on the website under the Events tab.
If you have any questions please contact me at email@example.com.
Paul Cappa, Past President
WOSA 12 and Under Champs
Congratulations Officials and Volunteers at the WOSA 12 and Under Champs this weekend. We had many compliments on the outstanding job we did and everyone who participated deserves credit! Our meet management team led by Sheri Cappa, Greg Lewis and Paul Cappa, and Meet Referee Saad Aldin, deserve extra accolades on doing an outstanding job. We could not have done this without some help from senior and minor officials from other clubs and even a few coaches who were chipping in with watering the officials on deck. If any of them are reading this, thanks a lot!
From Meet Co-Managers Sheri and Greg: This past weekend went smoothly and saw plenty of great swimming - congratulations to all participants! Thanks so much to all who helped pull off a terrific event. The set-up and tear-down crew worked like a well-oiled machine - thank you for a great job! Thanks to the canteen crew for keeping us fuelled! Officials from far and wide were needed to run this Regional meet and it all came together. Thank you to everyone for stepping up to help in the office, behind the blocks and around the pool deck! The small but mighty awards committee kept on top of labelling and distributing ribbons and medals - thank you. Staff at the Western Student Recreation Centre were exceptional in their support and assistance - thank you. Well done, LAC!
And a note from an out-of-town parent: Hi all - a quick note of thanks on a very well run swim meet this past weekend (June 14-15 2014). I'm sending this to email addresses listed in the meet package, please extend our thanks to all who volunteered from your club and helped host your meet including WOSA organizers. We were visiting from Cambridge (CAJ Aquajets) and have been to many different swim events over the past few years but this one in particular was one of the most well run events. Also want to mention, the events package we purchased was the most complete and informational we've seen (all team names and abbreviations, swimmer names and times, logsheet on back to record event times) - thanks again and congrats!
Introduction to Chief Judge Electronics
So far I have introduced Clerk of Course, Chief Finish Judge, Chief Timekeeper, Electronics Operator, Starter, and Meet Manager. This week I will introduce Chief Judge Electronics. Remember this is a very brief outline of the usual duties.
Chief Judge Electronics – This job is very much like Chief Finish Judge except that instead of it being done in the office, it is done out on the deck with the Electronics Operator. Please review the Chief Finish Judge description from 5 weeks ago. Typically we will use EITHER a Chief Finish Judge, OR a Chief Judge Electronics, not both. Ideally, to use a Chief Judge Electronics, you must be prepared to stop the meet while the CJE does the job for the just completed heat. For preliminaries and timed finals there is usually not enough time to do that. Typically the CJE will be used during finals. The reason for this is that it is nice to be able to tell the audience that the times on the scoreboard are official and that way they know the final results for the just completed heat immediately.
This is concludes my review of Senior Officials. You will notice that I have left out Recorder/Scorer and Referee and that is because you really need to do one (R/S) or all (Referee) of the other positions as prerequisites first.
If you find any or all of these positions appealing, and you do not prefer the online clinics, I plan on giving live clinics for each of these next season.
If anyone has any questions about anything officiating related, please do not hesitate to contact me.
