Newsletter 2013-14 Issue 41

CONGRATULATIONS to our Provincials squad, who performed well over the course of the long 4 day event in Brantford. As with all meets, there were some great swims, some good swims and some not-so-good swims. For senior swimmers at the championship level a great swim can be considered as any of:  a well-executed race plan; an improvement in technique sustained throughout the race; racing as hard for 7th as for 1st; a personal best. For a good swim the same applies, perhaps not a personal best but close. The "not-so-good" swims, and everybody has them, require a bit of (but not too much) analysis - perhaps tactical and/or technical execution were a bit lacking, perhaps your body wasn't warmed up properly, perhaps you weren't properly fuelled or hydrated, maybe you just weren't in your ideal performance state, physically AND mentally ready! Together with your coach you figure it out, try to take something positive from it, and most importantly, get over it and get on with it! Whether it's a great swim,a good swim or a poor swim, the best thing you can do is leave it there and move on to the next one. Your very best performance can be in your very next race!

CONGRATULATIONS to our Provincial individual medalists Maggie MacNeil (1G-3S), Adam Purdy (1S), William Stewart and Nick Mitchell  (2B), and Jessica Allen (1B); and to our 13-14 girls relay teams, who finished in the top 3 in all 4 relay events (1S-3B). Team members were Jessica Allen, Menley Langham, Maggie MacNeil, Jenna Roman, and Ellie Wong. Also to finalists Josie Andres, David Armstrong, Dominic Cappa, Vincent Cappa, Hayden Richardson, Aitana Robinson, and Jenna Roman. More congratulations to Maggie for achieving her first Senior National qualifying time (200FL) and establishing 3 club records (100BK, 100FL, 200FL). She joined Jessica, Menley, Jenna and Ellie in establishing 4 club records in the 13-14 girls relay events. CONGRATULATIONS girls!

GOOD LUCK to our 7 swimmers competing in the Open Water Provincial Championships tomorrow, and to everyone racing at the Hauch Meet - stay hydrated, wear your sunscreen, race smart, race tough, and as always HAVE FUN!

On behalf of all LAC swimmers, coaches and parents, we want to say "bon voyage" and extend best wishes to Hayley Nell, who will be moving to Toronto this summer to pursue a physiotherapy degree at the University of Toronto. Hayley has been a valuable and valued member of the LAC  family since 2001, the first 10 years as a swimmer and since 2011 in a coaching capacity. We will all miss you Hayley, and we look forward to your return!

CONGRATULATIONS to Mark Lukings, who achieved Level 5 Officials status at the Provincial Championships in Brantford last weekend. LAC, and the entire Western Region, have benefitted tremendously from Mark's years of tireless, selfless, and enthusiastic service, and we are indeed fortunate to count him as one of our own. His passion for all things LAC, all things swimming, and all things officiating-related have been, and continue to be, essential to our success.  CONGRATULATIONS Mark, an officiating distinction well-earned and well-deserved. As a bonus for LAC, with his Level 5 status Mark will now be even better able to help us grow our officiating numbers, as he can help with sign-offs for every position on the deck.

The following food vendors will be at Thames Park this weekend during the meet: Goodah (gourmet grilled cheese), Sali’s (hot dog, burger, sausage and fries) and Yogen Fruz (yoghurt, smoothies etc.)

We are still need of help with timing and strokes&turns for this event, which will take place on Sat evening after the 13&over session of Hauch. ANY of you, swimmers and parents alike, if you are able to give a few extra hours of your time to help out, it would be greatly appreciated. Sign up is available on the LAC web site under the "Events" tab - Hauch Meet - Sessions 4c & 4d.  If you have any questions please contact me at

Paul Cappa, Meet Manager

The banquet is still over 3 months away but before the season is over, it would be great for you to check your cameras, phones and computers for any great pictures from this season before they get deleted or forgotten about. If you have any pictures from this season you would like included in the banquet slide show this fall, please forward them to Kevin Ryan @  If the files are too large for email, please copy them to a disk or USB stick and arrange to deliver them to Kevin at the Dr. Paul Hauch meet this weekend.

The Dr. Paul Hauch Invitational and the Sunset Masters Meet are this weekend and while the sign-ups are looking a lot better, there are a few sessions where things are looking pretty tough. There are minimum numbers that are required in order to be able to run a session. Your help is essential and is truly appreciated. For Strokes and Turns, we need qualified officials. For Timers, the clinic is not mandatory. Remember that siblings and the swimmers (14 and over) can time at the sessions where they are not also swimming and help with any session credits that you still require. If they are in high school, then they can also get those volunteer hours, which are mandatory for graduation, at the same time. Come out and enjoy a fun day outdoors!

Anyone interested in moving up the officiating ladder next season, please email me ASAP.

If anyone has any questions about anything officiating related, please do not hesitate to contact me.

See you at Hauch!

Mark Lukings L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair
