Newsletter 2014-2015 Issue 5 October 21
CONGRATULATIONS one final time to everyone on a great 2013-14 swim year. Sunday night’s banquet is proof positive that we are reaching for and achieving excellence at every level. The criteria used to determine our award winners will be posted to the website; you can use these criteria to help you set your goals, if you haven’t already. If you want to see how you are stacking up with swimmers from across Canada, or want to know how fast you have to be to rank in the top 50 nationally in your age category, go to www.swimming.ca and look for the "TAS Power Rankings" under the Records and Rankings tab. Also, if you want to know what it takes to make the LAC All-Time Top 10 lists, they are on our website. Check the “What’s New” section of the website for a re-cap of our award winners.
Thank you to Kevin Ryan for his video montage and to our guest speaker Natalie Mastracci for her words of inspiration.
The banquet serves as our last opportunity to look in the rear-view mirror - now, it's all eyes forward with both hands firmly on the wheel. The road to excellence is a bumpy one, because it's a road that’s always under construction. As you continue your fall training keep your BIG goals firmly in mind, and let’s strive to demonstrate an “ANYTIME, ANYWHERE” attitude in everything we do.
Finally, CONGRATULATIONS to everyone for some good swimming at our time trial. Special congratulations to first-time Regional qualifiers Alice Couto, Julia Couto, and Duncan Shearer.

Harvest/Autumn Swim Meets
MSSAC is looking forward to a great Halloween weekend for our upcoming Harvest/Autumn swim meets. We are looking for volunteers as timers for the meet, especially for Friday evening and Saturday evening sessions. There are also a few positions available for Starter, Chief Timer, Recorder Scorer and Clerk. If you are looking to progress your officiating you can email Officials@mississaugaswimming.com to volunteer.
Thanks, MSSAC meet management
In keeping with the celebratory tone of Sunday evening’s LAC banquet, I want to congratulate LAC officials on a couple of things:
Sunday morning’s time trial went swimmingly! An excellent job was done by all, but a special congrats to Sheri Cappa, our meet manager! It was also nice to see Ed MacNeil back in the saddle as Referee and, due to our shortage of Level II officials, we had to pull in a couple of alumni officials to help out, so thanks to Margaret Marshall and Karey O’Brien for coming out and helping!
I also want to thank LAC officials for their progress last year on getting deck sign-offs. In the 2014 portion of last season, 56 LAC officials received at least one deck sign-off, many of them got several sign-offs, and some are now fully certified Timers and Strokes and Turns officials! This is a massive momentum change and a huge step forward toward adding a bunch of level II officials this season!
To clarify once again, a level II official must have taken 3 different officials clinics, which must include Timer and Strokes and Turns, AND must have two deck sign-offs for each. I have added brief descriptions of all of the positions on the Officials tab. I encourage everyone, but especially those who are going for Level II, to read these over and select 2, 3, or 4 positions that they will take the clinics for. Here is a link to those descriptions: https://www.teamunify.com/SubTabGeneric.jsp?team=canlac&_stabid_=114217
Upcoming Officials Events
Timekeeper Clinic: CHOCC on Saturday, October 25 at 6:30 A.M. (Sign-up on the LAC website)
***CANCELLED*** - Up-The-Ladder Information and Strategy Session: Medway arena on Saturday November 1 at 12:30 P.M. I will be allowing time at the Level II clinics and the Timer clinic to discuss this and I will also be adding strategies to the Officials tab.
PARA Swimming Strokes and Turns Clinic: Saturday November 15 at Conestoga College in Kitchener. This is an all day clinic, free of charge, and refreshments and lunch are typically provided. You can sign up for this using your OSOA account.
Level II Clinics: I will be hosting clinics for Chief Time Keeper, Chief Finish Judge, Clerk of Course and Starter prior to Nothers. I am just waiting to hear about room availability at CGAC before booking.
Nothers Fall Invitational: Denise McDonald email@example.com the Meet Referee for Nothers, would like anyone who wants a chance to learn a new Level II position to let her know and she will arrange to pair you with an experienced Senior official at Nothers for training and perhaps a session or two on your own. You just need to be willing to take the clinic prior to Nothers. You can do this online or in a classroom clinic. This is also a good opportunity to sit with an electronics operator to learn and maybe even take the controls with a mentor watching. Karey commented on how unexpectedly simple and enjoyable this job was at the Time Trial.
