Newsletter 2014-2015 Issue 8 November 11
Hard to believe our Nothers Invitational is fast approaching, the fall season is flying by and it underlines the importance of getting better on a daily basis. The training habits you are forming now are the habits that will show up in competition sooner or later in the season, so hopefully you are working purposefully and persistently on good habits like streamlining and dolphin kicking underwater off the wall and stroking before you breathe on the break-outs and finishing every repeat and every set as well as you start it. There are some who believe that competition is about "rising to the occasion", when in fact the opposite is true. When you go to a swim meet your performance will not be magically elevated to a new level - what really happens is you perform at the level of your training in the days and weeks prior to the meet. In the critical moment (the swim meet), we fall back on our training more than we "rise to the occasion." Thus the importance of practicing with championship effort...over, and over, and over again.
Note: We are very excited to have John Leonard, Executive Director of the American Swim Coaches Association for the past 30 years, coming to London to provide an exclusive learning opportunity for our coaches, parents and swimmers. John is generally regarded around the world as one of the most well-known, respected and influential figures in competitive swimming, and he will be coming to London to share his views on the role of the parent in competitive swimming, and his expertise as an active age group coach in Fort Lauderdale, FL. On Fri.Nov.14 from 6-7:30pm in the upstairs meeting room at Medway Arena (beside CGAC) all parents are welcome to listen to John talk about the 10 most important things a swim parent should know. On Sat.Nov.15 and the morning of Sun.Nov.16, John will be leading the entire LAC coaching staff through an intensive workshop focused on delivering quality coaching to age group swimmers. We are thrilled to have John coming to London, and we are hopeful that as many of you as possible are available to listen to him share his experiences in the world of competitive swimming at all levels.

Western Varsity Swim Meet (Sunday) - Timers Needed
On Sunday, November 16th Western will be hosting a Tri-Meet at WSRC competing against swimmers from U. of Guelph and U. of Alberta.
Warm-ups are at 11.00 am, with some seriously fast swimming from 12.00 pm until 2.00 pm. We are looking for additional timers. This is a perfect meet for LAC high schoolers to earn volunteer hours and come out and cheer on your varsity teammates. Parents welcome too!
Please email me to reserve your place on deck. Thanks for your support.

Congratulations to Greg Lewis! This past weekend, at Swim International in Brantford, Greg was evaluated for elevation to a Level V Master Official. As expected, Greg performed, well, masterfully and is now LAC’s newest affiliated Level V official! Greg’s swimmers have graduated from LAC but hopefully Greg will be with us for a long while yet. Us Level V’s tend to hang in there! If you see Greg around make sure you congratulate him.
We had the first of the 5 live clinics on Monday night and 6 enthusiastic aspiring Level II officials learned all about being a Chief Timekeeper. These clinics are an important step in becoming self-sufficient at our home meets. Your participation would be greatly appreciated.
I have had a couple of people step up to learn how to be the Timing Console Operator which is perhaps one of officiating’s best kept secrets. Excellent job, and not a lot of competition for the work. We could use a few more people. If you are willing, please let me know and I will arrange for you to mentor with someone.
Upcoming Officials Events
I found out on Monday that the Friday, Clerk of Course clinic was in conflict with Andrew’s special Parent Information Session on Friday evening. Out of respect for Andrew, his guest speaker, John Leonard, and several parents who wanted to attend both, I am pulling the COC clinic forward to Friday from 4:00 until 6:00 PM so that you will be able to do the clinic and then scoot over to Medway Arena for the Andrew’s session. See below. If anyone was signed up and cannot make the earlier time, I apologize, but it was the best I could do. If you will be late, let me know how late, it is a short clinic.
PARA Swimming Strokes and Turns Clinic: Saturday, November 15 at Conestoga College in Kitchener. This is an all-day clinic, free of charge, and refreshments and lunch are provided. You can sign up for this clinic using your OSOA account as explained on the Officials tab on the LAC web site. If you wanted to attend this AND my Saturday morning clinic(s) then you should select this PARA clinic. It is only offered every two years or so and the instructor comes from Montreal.
Level I Timekeeper Clinic: Thursday, November 13, 6:15 – 8:15 PM, CGAC Upper Level Meeting Room.
Clerk Of Course Clinic: Friday, November 14, 4:00 – 6:00 PM, CGAC Lower Level Meeting Room.
Starter Clinic: Saturday, November 15, 7:00 – 9:00 AM, CGAC Lower Level Meeting Room.
Strokes and Turns Clinic: Monday, November 17, 6:30 – 9:00 PM, CGAC Upper Level Meeting Room.
Nothers Fall Invitational:
You can sign up for senior officials jobs at Nothers now using your OSOA.ca account. You must have taken the clinic to do any job except Timekeeper but as long as you are sure that you will take the clinic, in a class or online, prior to Nothers then you can sign up now. Denise McDonald email@example.com the Meet Referee for Nothers, would like anyone who wants a chance to learn a new Level II position to let her know ASAP and she will arrange to pair you with an experienced Senior official at Nothers for training and perhaps a session or two on your own. Again, you just need to be willing to take the clinic prior to Nothers.
If you have any questions, please contact me via the email address below.
