Newsletter 2014-2015 Issue 18 January 27
LAC has been fortunate to be able to offer some exciting opportunities to a fairly broad cross-section of our athletes over the last month. A Start & Underwater clinic for some of our senior swimmers; a Breaststroke clinic for a range of swimmers who have demonstrated competence and potential in that stroke; TV Ontario recently selected us as the feature club for one of their Sports Labs for Kids segments (that will air in the summer); we have a nutrition seminar scheduled for this Friday; a group of age group swimmers will be training in Florida over the March Break; Head Coach Andrew and swimmer Maggie recently spent 3 days in Montreal after a competition to train with and learn from Commonwealth Games gold medalist Katerine Savard and her coach. And of course we were fortunate to have world swimming expert John Leonard come for a visit in November and lead us all, swimmers, coaches and parents, through some of his methodologies.
Last week the coaching staff sat down to review goals and expectations, and talk about how we can continue to work on improving product delivery. What we want everyone to know is that we are always looking for new stones to turn over to help our swimmers develop the skills, attitude and mindset to compete at their highest possible level. We will continue to seek out innovative opportunities for our athletes and coaches, provided they are initiatives that align with our philosophy of caring about the athlete 6 years from now as much as we care about the athlete 6 months from now.

Did you know that LAC works bingo at the Lucky Days bingo hall once a month as a form of fundraising? The LAC bingo committee is in need of some new volunteers who can help us out on a regular basis. Working bingo requires that volunteers arrive at the bingo hall at approximately 4:30pm. We count and sell cards for the evening, and then help tidy up before heading home at about 10:00pm. Volunteers receive one session credit and $40.00 towards the family travel account for each bingo session worked. If you think this is something that you can do to support our club please contact Rhonda Springer at firstname.lastname@example.org. Our next bingo date is February 11 and we would love to have some new volunteers join us.

On February 7 and 8 we are hosting the Western Region Sting Meet and I need the help of the LAC officials who are not attending the WOSA champs the same weekend. The Sting Meet is a two session single ended meet for swimmers who are still working toward the eventuality of qualifying for WOSA. This is also a great opportunity for people, who have recently taken clinics for new positions to get some deck experience. Many of LAC’s more experienced officials will be out of town and we will need your help. I am the Meet Referee for this meet. You can sign up for senior positions using your OSOA official’s account. You can find instructions on how to do this on the LAC website in the Officials tab after you have signed in. If you have any trouble with this process then please email me. Timers and Strokes and Turns officials will sign up the usual way on the LAC site.
The Western Region will be hosting their Spring Clinics on Saturday, March 7 at Conestoga College in Cambridge. I have posted the flyer for these clinics on the Officials tab on the LAC Web Site. There is a selection of clinics in the morning and again in the afternoon. There is no charge and morning refreshments and lunch are provided.
If you have any questions, please contact me via the following email address.
