Newsletter 2014-2015 Issue 27 April 7
Once again, well done everyone on some very good racing last weekend. We had 6 swimmers compete at the World & Pan-Am Trials Apr.1-4. Maggie MacNeil established 4 club records in the 15-17 and Open girls 100 & 200FL events and on the strength of these swims was named to the 19-swimmer Canadian World Junior Championship team that will compete in Singapore in August. Paulina Bond, in her first meet representing LAC, established a club record in the Open girls 50FL, and raced in 3 finals. In her first senior national level meet Jessica Allen achieved personal bests in both her races, while Vincent Cappa swam to a pb in the 400FR. Brayden Salmon (on the comeback trail) and Robert Wise also represented LAC. This was Robert’s last meet, as he has announced his retirement from swimming. Robert swam for LAC for 13 years starting in 2002-03, and proudly represented the club at the senior national level since 2009. Congratulations, and thank you Robert, for your great contribution.
At our Pentathlon meet, there were plenty of personal bests, with 7 swimmers demonstrating great versatility by winning the overall Pentathlon award (combined time in all 5 events) in their age category.
There were many promising signs in our first long course competition of the season. There are 5 weeks until our next competition (Hollandia), so keep working hard. There are half as many turns in the long course pool, so make sure you’re working on making them twice as good. And whenever you ask yourself to go faster in your training, make sure you’re also asking yourself to maintain your stroke length and efficiency. Half as many turns in the long course pool means less turning and more swimming, so make sure when you’re swimming under stress and fatigue in your main sets (like in a race) you’re paying attention to the technical details.

It was very nice to see such a completely staffed Pentathlon on the weekend. You and the large number of visiting officials had the event bursting with volunteers! We even had two stroke judges per side which is something we do not see very often, even at our bigger meets. Awesome job everyone!
I also had the pleasure of officiating at the Canadian Swimming Trials this weekend (Monday, Thursday, and Saturday) Yes two trips to Scarborough! It was great to see the best swimmers in the country up close, and happily I did not have to disqualify any of them! I also got to meet some of the officiating elite again. Nice people at all levels.
I want to remind people to sign up for senior positions at our meets early. We run great meets and officials from other clubs like to get experience here. Our Meet Referees will do everything they can to give LAC officials the jobs that they are looking for but not if you sign up at the last minute. The sign-ups for senior officials for the Hollandia Spring Invitational AND the Swim Ontario Summer Festival are available using your OSOA.CA accounts. You can sign-up now for these jobs as long as you will be qualified to do them by taking the clinic prior to the meet. These are good opportunities to start working on your deck sign-offs and achieving level II official status this season. After these two meets we have just our season ending outdoor Dr. Paul Hauch Invitational.
I will be offering another series of official’s clinics before the Hollandia Spring Invitational. These will be the last live clinics this season as I am managing the Summer Festival and will be the Meet Referee for Hauch. This should keep me busy enough. As soon as I have the dates arranged, I will send out an email with the information. Mark Lukings L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair email@example.com
