Coaches Report

Great to meet with all of our first-time LAC parents last Saturday – as mentioned we are thrilled to have you and your children joining our great sport and great team.

We want to reiterate a couple of ideas discussed on Saturday, and this is good review for our returning parents as well:

1. Our mission statement is “To provide opportunities for all to be the best they can be in a positive, caring, and safe environment.” I am proud to tell you that all of our coaches are coach-certified, safety-trained, and have completed the now mandatory Vulnerable Sector Check.

2. The primary objective in the Development program is “Learn to Swim”; in the Age Group program is “Learn to Train”; and in the Senior program is “Learn to Race.” However, the coaches strive to consistently teach in all three of these key areas at all levels of the club.

3. Two of our main messages to our swimmers, on the training side: 1) “The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.” Your child will learn the value of hard work – our coaches praise hard work over talent. 2)”Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” Your child will learn the importance of self-confidence, self-reliance, and the power of positive thinking. A great work ethic and a positive attitude will take you far in life.

4. Two other messages we consistently bring home to our swimmers, regarding the competition side: 1) “You can be a winner without placing first” and 2) “It can be a good race without being a personal best.”  As in life, so in swimming: take pride in the victories and successes, but remember we learn more from our setbacks and disappointments. Use failure as a stepping stone, not a stopping point.

CONGRATULATIONS to Adam Purdy for being named Ontario's male PARA Swimmer of the Year for 2014-15, and to William Stewart for being one of nine recipients of the 2015-16 Team Aquatic Supplies Regional Scholarships, recognizing outstanding academic and athletic achievement.

Just a reminder that the Western Region Clinic Day will held at Conestoga College (Cambridge Campus) on Sunday October 4 from 8:30 A.M. until 3:00 P.M. ALL clinics will now be presented INCLUDING the Introduction to Swimming (formerly called the Timer Clinic), which will be in the afternoon. You can pick one clinic in the morning and one in the afternoon or just the morning or the afternoon if you prefer. Morning refreshments and lunch will be provided. There is no charge for this event. I have posted a flyer, with a map, on the Officials tab of the LAC website. You must be logged on to get to the Officials tab. Car-pooling is an option if interested. If you are planning on attending please register by emailing

One of the changes this year includes the requirement for ALL officials to fill out and sign the Code of Conduct form and the PIPEDA form. If you are intending to officiate this year and have not filled out BOTH of these forms then please sign in to the LAC site, hover your cursor over the Officials tab, select the form from the drop down, print and fill out the form and drop it in the LAC mailbox at CGAC. If this is not done prior to your first meet or clinic then you will be required to fill them out at the meet PRIOR to officiating.

Once we create or activate your new officials account you will receive an email with your Username and Password and a link to the site. It is MANDATORY that you sign in to your account and fill in the missing and/or incorrect information. Please be careful and provide accurate information. You can also change your Username and Password on this page. If you change your password please be careful because it does not display your password and it only makes you type it once. Finally there is a question asking for permission to email you. It is your choice but it is preferable that you give permission so that we can contact you about things such as a job you have signed up for or other official related information. Your email address will NOT be sold nor will we abuse the privilege of emailing you. Most information will be sent via this newsletter or the Team Unify email process.

The Fall Start Up Meet (formerly known as the October Time Trial) is coming up onOctober 18. If you would like the opportunity to work any senior position (other than Timer and S&T) then please email me with your request. It is our goal to staff this meet entirely in house. I will be hosting an Introduction to Swimming and a Strokes and Turns clinic prior to this meet. Sign-ups will be posted once scheduled.
