Coaches Report

Hopefully everyone has signed up for the Time Trial and annual Awards Banquet this coming Sunday (Oct.18).
This is the first time we'll have everyone together since we started one month ago, so a great opportunity for younger swimmers to watch and meet older swimmers, and for newer parents to get a sense of the swim meet experience and the feeling of "family" that permeates the LAC organization.

A reminder on the swim meet side of things, generally the coaches will select the events that they want your children to swim in the various meets throughout the year.  There will certainly be some discussion between coach and swimmer on events and, as the swimmers become more experienced they are given more input in the event selection process. The coaches strive to ensure that all swimmers compete in all events throughout the season, with a view toward variety, versatility and durability. One of the important tenets of the "Long Term Athlete Development Strategy" is "non-specialization." We like to use the "PENCIL" metaphor to describe this principle: If you always use the same pencil, it always requires sharpening, and eventually (sooner than later) the pencil is sharpened right down to nothing. So, especially for our younger swimmers, i.e., until at least high school age, the coaches work on filling the pencil case and making sure every pencil is sharp, by using them all in equal amounts, both in training and competition.

LAC Awards Banquet

This year at the Awards Banquet we will have a raffle table with lots of great prizes and gift certificates to be won! Tickets can be purchased at the banquet ~ $5 for 3 tickets, $10 for 10 tickets and $20 for 25 tickets (cash only)

Barbeque Fundraiser

Saturday, October 24th from 10am - 2pm, London Aquatic Club will be hosting a Barbeque Fundraiser at the Oakridge Superstore (Oxford and Hyde Park)  We are looking for volunteers (parents and swimmers) to come out and help serve!  Please contact Jane Callon at if you are able to volunteer.  Please spread the word to friends and family to come out and support our club!

LAC Equipment Orders

We will be taking orders for LAC spirit wear once again at the LAC Start Up Meet on Sun Oct 18. Please bring a cheque payable to LAC for orders. Order forms can be found on the LAC website under the “Swimmer A/Cs” tab.

Clinics! A reminder that I have booked 2 clinics prior to the Fall Start Up Meet and there are sign-ups posted on the LAC home page. Introduction to Swimming on Wednesday, October 14 from 6:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. and Strokes and Turns on Friday, October 16 from 5:30 P.M. to 8:00 or 8:30 P.M., both at CGAC. The Introduction to Swimming Clinic replaces the Level I Timer Clinic and it is required for all LAC families who have not yet taken it. Please sign-up on the LAC website if you intend to come but last minute drop-ins will not be turned away. There is a session credit for everyone taking each clinic for the first time but repeats are welcome if anyone would like a refresher. If anyone would like to review the course materials prior to attending or to print them to bring to the clinic then go to, click on resources on the left, officials and certification program on the right, and there will be a clinics link on that page. Only the Introduction to Swimming and the S&T clinics are up to date on this page. I have the rest of the clinics in case anyone wants them.

The Fall Start Up Meet (formerly known as the October Time Trial) is coming up on October 18. The Timer and Strokes and Turns jobs were posted and filled the same day and the Senior Official jobs are full as well. Please make sure that you honour your commitment. Last year the dress code for officials was transitioning from all white to white shirts and black on the bottom (pants, capris, shorts or skirts and black foot wear). This new dress code is now in effect. We need to be there for Nothers, but let’s have white tops for the Start-up meet please. Remember that officials are expected to check in between 1 hour and 45 minutes before the session starts so please drop off your swimmer for warm-up, check in, and then hang around for the briefing at 7:25. Since we do not have the big meeting room booked for this meet. We will meet upstairs by the timing booth and figure it out from there.

A reminder that ALL Officals MUST fill out and sign the Code of Conduct form AND the PIPEDA form. If you are intending to officiate this year and have not filled out BOTH of these forms then please sign in to the LAC site, hover your cursor over the Officials tab, select each form from the drop down, print and fill out the forms and drop them in the LAC mailbox at CGAC. If this is not done prior to your first meet or clinic then you will be required to fill them out at the meet PRIOR to officiating. We cannot activate your Official account status until we have these forms.

Once we create or activate your new officials account you will receive an email with your Username and Password and a link to the site. It is MANDATORY that you sign in to your account and fill in the missing and/or incorrect information. Please be careful and provide accurate information. You can also change your Username and Password on this page. If you change your password please be careful because it does not display your password and it only makes you type it once. Finally there is a question asking for permission to email you. It is your choice but it is preferable that you give permission so that we can contact you about things such as a job that you have signed up for or other official related information. Your email address will NOT be sold nor will we abuse the privilege of emailing you. Most information will be sent via this newsletter or the Team Unify email process.

If you have any questions please contact me, Mark Lukings L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at
