Coaches Report

Lots of racing going on this weekend, good luck to everyone, whether you are at U of T, Etobicoke, or right here at home at our 12&Under Celebration. For our older swimmers the meets this weekend signal an opportunity to practice good racing skills and habits when you are training hard, with no resting or tapering or "backing off". Here's an excerpt from a recent SwimSwam article by contributor Olivier Poirier Leroy:

Because it is so rare, we expect success at the highest levels to be extraordinarily complicated. We imagine that the only way someone could swim so fast is by some miracle technique, some crazy unorthodox training schedule, or more increasingly, a miracle supplement (both legal and not-so-much). This is probably why we are so drawn to the shortcuts and the promises of limit-busting gear and supplements. Finally, the advertisements tell us, we have the tools to outsmart what it takes to be elite, to outflank and out-gadget it. As a result, we begin to believe in the shortcuts, to the point that we begin to neglect the things that truly matter. Like technique. Showing up every day. Doing it a little more and doing it a little better than the next guy or gal. When it comes down to it, performing well in the pool is that simple. Easy? Rarely. But simple? Almost always.

Congratulations to the following swimmers for their selection to and participation in regional training camps at the University of Guelph:

Fundamentals Camp: Emma Pastrano,Sam Elkami,Lauren Coome,Duncan Shearer,Ewan Shearer,Ashton Kelly,Thomas Belton
Learn to Train Camp:Lauren Campbell,Catie Tennant,Sarah Tyrrell,Sasha Goodreau,Junsoo Pak,Alex Lobo,Carter Buck,Colin Shearer,McKellar Watson,Jack Haycock,James Quigley

RETIREMENT ANNOUNCEMENT

It is with sadness that we announce the retirement from competitive swimming of Adam Purdy, who has represented LAC with distinction at the international level since 1994. Paralympic and World Championship gold medalist, world record holder, and most recently proud Para Pan Am medalist, last summer in Toronto Adam achieved his stated 2013 comeback objective, to swim in front of his family and friends in his home country, and win an international medal for his children. His 11 year old daughter Olivia will be joining the LAC family, and Adam is hoping to share his vast swimming experience via the coaching avenue, as well as continuing in his role with Kimik iT, which develops management software for sports events around the world. We all wish you well Adam, and thank you sincerely for being such a fine ambassador for our great sport and the London Aquatic Club.

It’s Official!

It was nice to see a number of LAC officials helping out at the Western Dual meet on Saturday evening.  Thanks to everyone who came out to help!

The 12 and Under Celebration is coming up this weekend on January 16 and 17.  We are still looking for Strokes and Turns officials for both days and a few timers for Sunday.  If you are qualified for Strokes and Turns, please sign up for that as your first choice.  If you are not qualified then sign up and then come out to the clinic on Friday evening.  If you will not be qualified for Strokes and Turns by the meet then sign up for timing on Sunday.  Timing is the only job that does not require the clinic prior to doing the job.

There is still a lot of room in the clinics this week.  Make your officiating life more interesting by trying some other jobs!  Drop-ins are welcome but please try to be on time.

Upcoming Clinics:

1)    CANCELLED - No one signed up - Chief Timekeeper: Tuesday, January 12 – 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. - CGAC pool level meeting room

3)    Clerk Of Course: Thursday, January 14 – 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. - CGAC pool level meeting room

4)    Judge of Strokes and Turns: Friday, January 15 – 6:00 to 8:30 P.M. – CGAC ground floor meeting room.

Officiating Opportunities:

For those working on moving up the ladder or if you are going to these meets and don't enjoy sitting in the stands or if you just like to be helpful, here are some non-LAC officiating opportunities.  Your swimmer(s) may be attending 1 or 2 of these.  FYI away meets do not earn session credits but they are great experiences:

1. The Western Region Sting Meet - Hosted by Wilmot Aquatic Aces - January 30 and January 12, 2016   https://acesofficials.wordpress.com/

2.  Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Finals – Hosted by Western University - February 11-13.  Please email officiating requests to Suzanne Paulins at rpaulins040@rogers.com

3. Western Region Champs - Hosted by Brantford Aquatic Club - February 26-28th: Senior Officials - Crosby Gibson - crosby.gibson@rogers.com Minor Officials - bacevents30@yahoo.com

The Winter Western Ontario Officials Clinics will be held on Saturday, February 6 at the St. Thomas Campus of Fanshawe College.  I have posted the flyer on the LAC web site under the Officials tab that appears after you sign in to the site.  Please read it, register, and come out, as this is a great opportunity to learn from some very experienced officials.

If you have any questions please contact me, Mark Lukings L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at lac.coc@gmail.com

WOSA Champs - Brantford Feb 26-28
