Coaches Report

On March 23 it was Roger Bannister's 87th birthday. Who is Roger Bannister? Some parents might know, probably most if not all swimmers will not. Roger Bannister was a British medical student who was the first person to run faster than 4 minutes in the mile. Prior to him doing this it was considered an impossibility that a human could run that fast...scientists, doctors, coaches, athletes, journalists...no one thought 4 minutes would EVER be broken. Then along came Roger, who did it while training one hour per day during his residency in medical school. And the floodgates opened - within a very short time after he achieved this seemingly miraculous feat, 3 other runners did it as well, and today the sub-4 minute mile is nothing more than a pretty good time. It takes one pioneer to question conventional wisdom, to have the courage to not believe the myths and the naysayers, and the courage to push themselves physically and mentally to prove it. Artificial barriers are nothing more than stepping stones to excellence - get out there and get after it and don't let anyone tell you it can't be done. Focus instead on what can be done, focus on the possibilities, not the impossibilities, and leave the doubters in your dust. Thank you Roger Bannister, for proving to the world that it's more than OK to DREAM BIG!

CONGRATULATIONS to all of our Pentathlon overall winners:

It’s Official!

Alex Vanderkam vanderkam6404@rogers.com is our Competition Coordinator for Hollandia in May.  If you are interested in working in specific senior positions at this meet, please contact Alex soon.  People from other clubs are already approaching him to work at this very popular meet.

Clinics!

Speaking of senior officiating jobs, if you are interested in trying something other than Timing and Strokes and Turns, all you need to do is take the clinic for the job that you are interested in, let the Competition Coordinator know that you want to try the job, and that you would like a mentor, if it is your first time.  The jobs are described on the LAC web site.  Just sign in to the site, hover your cursor over Officials near the upper right, and select Levels/Positions from the drop down.  In many cases these jobs are easier than Strokes and Turns and having a variety of options makes your volunteering much more interesting.

Clinics are in the process of being scheduled and sign-ups will be posted on the LAC site shortly.  Please sign up if you intend to come.  If no one has signed up by 2 days prior to the clinic then it will be cancelled.  If there are any officials striving for Level II or Level III and you need a clinic that has been scheduled at a time that does not work for you, please let me know and I will see if we can rearrange things or accommodate you in another way.  For Level III you must have taken ALL of the clinics.  Please remember to bring your officials card with you so that it can be signed off for the clinic.  If you have lost your card we can fix that for you. If you are taking the Introduction To Swimming Clinic, you will receive a card there.

If anyone is interested in learning how to operate the timing system, this is learned by on the job training with a mentor.  Without fail, everyone who has tried this job, likes it and is still doing it.  If you would like to try this, with a mentor, at Hollandia, do let Alex know.

If you have any questions please contact me, Mark Lukings L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at lac.coc@gmail.com
