Coaches Report

CONGRATULATIONS to Devin Gotell for being selected to his third Paralympic team, on the strength of his performance in the 100m backstroke at the recently concluded Olympic and Para Swimming Trials. Devin is going to RIO!!! Congratulations also to Maggie MacNeil, who on the strength of her 100 butterfly race at Trials will as well be representing Canada this summer, at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii in August. Maggie (100FL) and Paulina Bond (100FR) also established club records at Trials. And congratulations to our other Trials competitors, three of whom were first-timers at Canada's premier domestic competition of the quadrennial: Jessica Allen, David Armstrong and Ryan Estabrooks were all first-timers, while Brayden Salmon was making his 2nd appearance at the meet.  And thank you to the 50 LAC'ers who made the trip to Toronto last Saturday to cheer on their teammates, get a taste of what an Olympic Trials looks, sounds, and feels like, and get the chance to train in the amazing facility that is the Toronto Pan-Am Pool. Special thanks to our chaperones for the day, Jane Callon, Sean Russell and Dan Shull.

I'm sure those of you who attended the Trials are all very motivated to ramp up your training even more, but for everyone, remember the importance of recovery. That is, get your 8 hours of sleep nightly, make sure you're replacing the calories you're expending in your daily training, and keep hydrated. As the weather begins to change, sickness can sometimes creep in - stay properly dressed and practice good hygiene. What you do at the pool needs to be supported by what you do away from the pool, and only you can ensure that this is being properly attended to.

It’s Official!

Senior Official positions are any officiating position other than Timing and Strokes and Turns.  Typically there will be one of each of these jobs for each finish end at a meet.  If you are trying these jobs after taking the clinic then we can pair you with a mentor until you are comfortable.

Alex Vanderkam is our Competition Coordinator for Hollandia in May.  If you are interested in working in specific senior positions at this meet, and will have the clinic by the meet, please contact Alex soon.  People from other clubs are already approaching him to work at this very popular meet.

Officiating Clinics!

Sign-ups for the clinics are now posted.  Here are a few things to be aware of:

The Level I Timer clinic is now known as the Introduction to Swimming Officiating clinic.  This is the clinic that is typically taken first because it covers a lot of basic information, not just about timing, but about officiating in general.

For the most part, you can take the clinics in any order, but I still recommend getting the Intro clinic done before your first meet, if at all possible.

The Chief Timekeeper is in charge of the Timers and must be able to step in for a Timer or a Strokes and Turns (S&T) official at the finish end, so it is required that you have taken the Intro and the S&T clinics and have experience in both of these jobs before signing up to be the Chief Timer.  That said, you CAN take the clinic so that you are ready once you have those other qualifications.

The rest of the jobs/clinics (other than Referee) have no required sequence.  We have a few S&T officials who have never timed but they cannot be at the finish end because they are not qualified to supervise the timers on their lane.  You can take ALL of the clinics and do a different job at each session that you work.  This makes things a lot more interesting.  In many cases you will find that the senior official jobs seem easier, and that may be true.  They just have more responsibility.

Any clinic that you take for the first time is worth a session credit.

If anyone is interested in learning how to operate the timing system, this is learned by on the job training with a mentor.  Without fail, everyone who has tried this job, likes it, is still doing it, and is probably keeping it a secret to avoid competition for the job!  If you would like to try this, with a mentor, at Hollandia, do let Alex know.

If you have any questions please contact me, Mark Lukings L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at

There is a FAQ page on the LAC website under the “parent info” tab under “session credits”. Please make sure you know your obligation for this swim season. LAC session credit summaries can be found on the club website. Your individual summary is available on your personal account.
