Hopefully everyone has signed up for the Time Trial and annual Awards Banquet this coming Sunday (Oct.16). This is the first time we'll have everyone together since we started one month ago, so a great opportunity for younger swimmers to watch and meet older swimmers, and for newer parents to get a sense of the swim meet experience and the feeling of "family" that permeates the LAC organization.

A reminder on the swim meet side of things, generally the coaches will select the events that they want your children to swim in the various meets throughout the year.  As swimmers become more experienced they are given more input in the event selection process. The coaches strive to ensure that all swimmers compete in all events throughout the season, with a view toward variety, versatility and durability. One of the important tenets of the "Long Term Athlete Development Strategy" is "non-specialization" in the early stages. The "PENCIL" metaphor is a good one to describe the "non-specialization" principle: If you always use the same pencil, it always requires sharpening, and eventually (sooner than later) the pencil is sharpened right down to nothing.  For our younger swimmers, i.e., until at least high school age, the coaches work on filling the pencil case and making sure every pencil is sharp, by using them all in equal amounts, both in training and competition.

Returning swim families should have received their swimmer statements October 5th, if you did not receive one please contact Donna at All new LAC swim families should have their Sept 30 and Oct 15 payments in to the club by now. If you have any questions or concerns contact Donna.

Please remember that there are entry fees for each of the swim competitions we attend, with the exception of our start-up time trial. Usually these fees are charged on a "per event" basis and average $8-10 per event. They will be included in your monthly swimmer statements.

The deadline to sign up for the banquet was October 9. If you forgot, our deadline to confirm numbers with the Greek-Canadian Club is tomorrow, Wed.Oct.12. Please email Jane Callon if you need to confirm   Swimmers are free, plus each family will receive 2 complimentary tickets. Additional tickets are $16 per person. For more info check the "Events - Team Functions" tab on our home page.

Any one interested in joining the canteen committee there will be a meeting on October 14 at CGAC at 5:00 pm in the upstairs meeting room. Please contact Sue Flannery our Canteen Co-ordinator if you have any questions

We have launched our equipment website within the Team Aquatic Supplies site. We are only using the TAS website for our club equipment needs. You will be able to find the groups within the club and the coordinating equipment required. Each page also includes a recommendation for optional bathing suits, caps, and goggles. Please note that if you are purchasing a snorkel please make sure you select the adult size. Futher instructions can be found on the LAC website under “Swimmers A/C” under the “LAC swim equipment” tab. When you place an order it will ship directly to your home.

Swimmers will now need a TAS shark card to receive discounts when purchasing Team Aquatic Supplies merchandise at swim meets or in their stores. The shark card can also be found on the LAC website under “Swimmers A/C” under the “LAC swim equipment” tab.

If you have any equipment questions please contact

Hi new parents! You should have received an email announcing the Introduction to Swimming Officiating Clinic that will be held THIS Wednesday, October 12 at CGAC in the ground floor meeting room.  Sign-ups are posted on the LAC website in the events space on home page.  Select the Team Functions tab.  I will be scheduling this one again, and all of the other clinics before Nothers.

The Western Region is hosting an afternoon of clinics this Saturday, October 15.  Registration starts at 12:30PM and the clinics start at 1:00PM.  The event will be held at Fanshawe College, St. Thomas Campus, 120 Bill Martyn Parkway, St. Thomas.  You can take your choice of one of the following clinics: Referee, Starter, Meet Manager, Chief Finish Judge/Chief Judge Electronics, and Judge of Strokes/Inspector of Turns. If you would like to attend please let Carol know at  For anyone striving toward Referee, it is always good to get a number of different perspectives on this job.  This is a great opportunity to hear from someone other than me!

We are in the process of registering/reactivating official registrations. When this is done there is typically a system-generated email from Swim Canada to the official with instructions that you must follow to complete the process.  Please do not ignore these emails.  If you do, it results in a lot of extra work for a few people.  Could you please also check to make sure that the email has not gone into your spam folder?

The LAC – Fall Start-Up Meet is coming up this weekend on the morning of Sunday, October 16.  I see that all of the minor official positions are filled and Alex tells me that we are all set for Senior officials so we are good to go!  Just a reminder to officials about dress code.  For this meet we are going with traditional white tops and black bottoms.  Senior officials should be in black pants or skirt (Trevor, don’t even think about it!)  Minor officials, at this meet we will still be accepting dark shorts but be aware that Swim Ontario is pushing the dress code and our invitationals are likely to be more formal this year.  If you have black pants, try it, I find that it keeps the water out of my shoes!

Speaking of which, this year is the first when we are expected to follow the new dress code which is white tops and black bottoms for timers and chief timekeepers, red polo shirts and black bottoms for everyone else.  We will be expected to comply starting with Nothers.  With that in mind, Donna and I are working toward offering for sale Red Polos with either LAC or Swim Canada embroidery on them.  Announcement to come.

Looking ahead to Nothers, I am getting lots of requests for senior positions from out of town officials.  If anyone from LAC wants these jobs please get to me soon with your availability and job preferences.

If you have any officiating questions please contact me, Mark Lukings L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at
