COACHES REPORT

Once again some great racing demonstrated last weekend at our Hollandia Invitational. Among the many highlights were the 41 swimmers who achieved 100% best times throughout the weekend, 40 swimmers collecting a total of 145 individual medals (43 gold, 58 silver and 44 bronze), 5 club records being broken, and 12 swimmers achieving their first ever Regional Championship qualifying time. CONGRATULATIONS to club record setters Jessica Allen (15-17 & open women 100BK), Jack Haycock (13/14 boys 50BR) and Maggie MacNeil (15-17 & open women 200IM) and to first time Regional Championship qualifiers Salma Al Ghazaly, Hailey Baarda, Caitlin Barclay, Lauren Coome, Shuban Gupta, Claire Kehler, Chloe Kennedy, Alexander Kopichanski, Arya Murray, Marko Puskar, Eric Wu, and Michael Zhang.  Congratulations as well to first-time Canadian Junior Championship qualifier Julia Blaha. For a more complete summary of 2017 Hollandia results see the "NEWS" section of the website.

As we move into the "home stretch" of the 2016-17 swim year, everyone stay focused and keep working hard. There are still opportunities for everyone to move closer to and maybe even realize their big goal(s) for the year. 3 weeks until Regionals, 6 weeks until 14&U Festival, 7 weeks until Provincials/AA Provincials, 9 weeks until Hauch, and Canadian Junior and Senior Championships beyond that. Yes, the finish line is coming into sight, but this is the time when your strongest focus and determination are required.

Canada Games Aquatic Centre Wall of Fame Ceremony

On Friday May 12 during the Hollandia meet 4 LAC'ers were added to the Wall of Fame on the main level of CGAC. Congratulations to Devin Gotell for his selection as a 3-time Paralympian, Ron Campbell as an "Achiever of Distinction" (1977 World University Games), and to Rose Bloch-Hansen and Mark Lukings in the "Founders & Builders" category. All four of these LAC-affiliated individuals are worthy and most deserving recipients of this honour, and special thanks to Rose and Mark for helping keep every swimmer's dreams alive through their super-human work in helping deliver our competitions for the past 2 decades.

IT’S OFFICIAL!

LAC Hollandia Invitational:  We had another great meet this past weekend with 17 teams, over 810 swimmers, and well over 6000 swims!  Getting this done requires a lot of help from a lot of people and all of you deserve a great big thanks!  Congratulations to our Meet Managers Ed MacNeil and Steve Langham, and our Meet Referee Greg Lewis on a job well done and another spectacular result!  I don’t have room here to mention everyone so I usually pick out a few each meet.  As the 3 gentlemen above, Mike Joudrey, Mary Allen, and the leaders of the various committees can attest, one of the biggest stressors leading up to the meet is the last minute scrambling to ensure that we have enough help.  At this time of year we are always counting on those very special people who have earned their session credits long ago and still come out to help.  If everyone was like these folks we would not require a session credit system at all!  We had one family who had their session credits done back at the WOSA Champs and they still completed another 26 credits at Hollandia!  Not every family can do this, but to EVERYONE who goes above and beyond, THANK YOU!  We could not do this without you!

Mary Allen and Mike Joudrey:  Mike and Mary have been the minor official’s coordinators for our meets for years.  All of you have met them when you check in for your sessions.  They have determined the requirements, checked the qualifications of officials, distributed the volunteers to provide the most balanced officiating, and calmed the Meet Referee and Meet managers for countless sessions.  They have been a blessing to our meets for years and they are retiring this season.  Mary’s last meet was Hollandia and Mike’s will be at Hauch in July.  If you see Mary and Mike around please make sure that you say hello and thank them for their years of dedicated service!

Dr. Paul Hauch Invitational (July 14 to 16): We are down to the last meet of the season!  For those who are new, this is our fun outdoor season-closing celebration.  Once again, we will need lots of help.  I am the Meet Referee (also known as the Competition Coordinator) who is in charge of officiating at the meet.  Minor officials (Timers and Strokes and Turns) sign-ups will be posted later by Mike Joudrey, but I need to start with the senior officials now.  If you have taken the clinic and can help as a senior official please let me know ASAP, via email, listing the positions that you want and the sessions that you can work.  The meet should be sanctioned shortly and the specific times will then be available but there are 2 sessions on Friday with warm-ups starting around noon and 3:30PM and 2 sessions on both Saturday and Sunday with warm-ups starting at 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM.

Wall Induction! – Rose Bloch-Hansen and I are still a little stunned and very honoured by our recent inductions onto the Wall of Aquatic Fame at CGAC!  I am still not clear on who everyone was who made this happen, but thank you!  When I look at some of the other names listed I am very humbled indeed.  This is certainly not something I was striving for nor did it ever cross my mind that it was a remote possibility, but thank you to everyone involved.  It is very nice to be recognized!  Pretty cool!

Meet Managers for the 2017-18 Season:  It is already that time of year where we begin the hunt for meet managers (and Meet Referee) for next season.  This is a job that provides a great feeling of accomplishment, much of it will be done on your own schedule prior to the meet, and you have lots of people to lean on and learn from.  If you are new we will give you the clinic and help you through the process.  If you are interested in learning more, please contact me at the email address below.

If you have any officiating questions please contact me, Mark Lukings L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at lac.coc@gmail.com
