COACHES REPORT

Last weekend's coaching clinic with Steve Haufler from the Orinda Country Club in California was excellent. Lots of great information and teaching tips for our coaching staff to digest and implement, and Coach Steve provided guest instruction to five different groups of our Development swimmers over the 2 days. Steve's last presentation was to a (small) group of our parents, and one of his comments that really hit home was that "Nothing BIG ever happens in practice." It's the accumulation of tiny little practice achievements (one more underwater kick, one hand-hit before breathing on a break-out, holding your breath from the flags in on every freestyle finish, streamlining on every push-off, keeping your head still in backstroke), practice after practice, for weeks and weeks, even months and months, that might lead to BIG things later on. But you have to be at practice consistently and constantly for those tiny little skills to add up to one GIANT performance. For most of you this is the 6th week of the fall/winter season. The Regional Championships are at Week 20, the Provincial Championships are at Week 24. Have you already started accumulating a vault of small yet important practice achievements that you will be able to draw from 14 or 18 or even 40 weeks from now? As Coach Steve said, "Every day shouldn't be a new decision". If you are truly committed to your swimming goals, coming to swim practice should be your default setting! And so should great practice execution every day - if you wait, "Later" often becomes "Never".

NOTHERS MUSIC

Swimmers,  Nothers is approaching. It is our first hosted meet of the season. Please help set the tone for a great warm-up and great weekend of swimming by providing your favourite warm-up songs using this link.: This opportunity to provide warm-up music applies to our 12&under swimmers as well - if you have some favourite songs that get you "pumped up", please submit them, they will be played!

IT’S OFFICIAL!

Nov. 4 Time Trial: The second Time Trial this season is fast approaching. If you are interested in trying a Senior position and have done the clinic then let me know and I will try to accommodate you.

Nothers Fall Invitational:  It is not too soon to start asking for senior positions at Nothers.  Some of the officials from attending clubs are already doing so. If you have done a clinic, or you know that you will do it before Nothers, and you would like to do the job, then please let me know soon.  If you have limited experience with the job and would like a mentor, please let me know that as well.  Also, we are always looking for people who would like to try running the timing system.  This is a great job and is only learned on the job with a mentor.  If you are interested, please let me know.  If you can run a smart phone then you should have no trouble with this.

Clinics:  I have scheduled a few clinics and Donna has posted sign-ups on the LAC web site.  Come out and see what the non-timing jobs are all about!

Starter – Saturday, October 28, 10:00 am to noon.  CGAC, downstairs meeting room.   This is the person who starts the races.  This is NOT the introductory clinic.

Chief Timekeeper – Wednesday, November 1, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  CGAC, downstairs meeting room.  This is the person in charge of the timers.

Judge of Strokes and Turns – Friday, November 3, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  CGAC, main floor meeting room.  Yes, it is a long one.  This is the clinic where you learn all of the rules regarding the start, strokes, turns, and finish of a race for each stroke.  We need LOTS of Judges of Strokes and Turns, ideally 18 or 20 per tank in an 8 lane pool.

Meet Manager – Thursday, November 9, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. CGAC, downstairs meeting room.  This is the person who organizes the meet.  It is easier than you might think, and very rewarding!

If you have any officiating questions please contact me, Mark Lukings L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at lac.coc@gmail.com

LAC SESSION CREDITS

Club hosted meets help to reduce membership fees by 20-25% as well as reducing travel costs by attending fewer out-of-town meets. To ensure the Club has sufficient resources to host meets, most LAC swim families are required to work a minimum of 22 sessionsduring club hosted meets (please see below for exceptions). These sessions may be worked through officiating or working at the club’s food canteen, awards or other positions. Any unfulfilled session credits will be billed at a rate of $40.00 per session to the swim family’s Swimmer Account at the end of the season. Please note that this is not meant to be a “fundraiser” but rather an incentive to participate in the running of home meets. Swim families may receive up to 5 donated session credits from another club family to complete their credits, however any more than the 5 donated session credits must be approved by the board. Session commitments are waived for first year swim families with no prior competitive swim club affiliation, as well as for introductory and post-secondary students training full time with the club and for varsity swimmers, although assistance during swim meets from these groups is greatly appreciated.  First year families ARE required to fulfill the LAC orientation program. This includes participating in an Introductory to Swimming clinic during the swim season and a follow up “on-deck” mentoring session.

*** Families of Development swimmers who are not in their first year of competitive swimming who do not have a swimmer in another level are required to fulfill only 11 of the assigned session credits.***

*The number of session credits will be reviewed by the board in the fall upon club enrolment and may be subject to change.

There is a session credit FAQ under the "Parent Info" tab under "Session Credits.
