Sat Nov 25 NO LAC workouts due to Nothers Invitational

Their season started off very strong, but the last 10 days has seen their fortunes change. I am "on the record" predicting they will win the Stanley Cup this decade, i.e., by the 2019-20 season. Yes, I'm talking about the Leafs. Here's a quote from their Head Coach Mike Babcock after one of their recent losses: “The level of commitment to doing it right for a championship team is that you got to do it every single day. You got to do it at practice and you got to do it when you don’t feel good and you got to do it when you travel and you got to do it when you’re tired and you just do it every single day and that becomes the norm and the expectation and that’s what we have to set here.”

Now, he's talking about professional athletes who are making a living doing their sport. But the lesson is one that all aspiring athletes, professional and amateur alike, and all people for that matter, would do well to heed. Seldom is it going to be perfect. It takes a lot of bumps and bruises, a lot of falling down and getting back up, to become confident and tough and battle-ready. It's about making sure that, not even...especially on your bad days (and we all have them) you can look in the mirror at the end of the day and say "I did my very best, and I am better and even more confident because of it."

Swimmers,  Nothers is approaching. It is our first hosted meet of the season. Please help set the tone for a great warm-up and great weekend of swimming by providing your favourite warm-up songs using this link.: This opportunity to provide warm-up music applies to our 12&under swimmers as well - if you have some favourite songs that get you "pumped up", please submit them, they will be played!

Nothers Fall Invitational:  It is not too soon to start asking for senior positions at Nothers.  A Senior position is other than Timing and Strokes and Turns. Some of the officials from attending clubs are already asking for spots. If you have done a clinic, or you know that you will do it before Nothers, and you would like to do the job, then please let me know soon.  If you have limited experience with the job and would like a mentor, please let me know that as well.  Also, we are always looking for people who would like to try running the timing system.  This is a great job and is only learned on the job with a mentor.  If you are interested, please let me know.  If you can run a smart phone then you should have no trouble with this.

Clinics:  I have scheduled a few clinics and Donna has posted sign-ups on the LAC web site.  Come out and see what the non-timing jobs are all about!

I have had some questions about course prerequisites and my answer is that they can be taken in any order.  IDEALLY the Introduction to Swimming Officiating is done first but that is not required.  The Intro clinic covers many think including Being a Timer and Safety Marshal.  The chief timer is the person in charge of the timers so you can take the clinic but we would prefer that you have some experience as a timer before you do the job as Chief Timer.  Doing the Chief Timer job also requires that you have the Strokes and Turns clinic because you might need to sub in for a Strokes and Turns official.  By the way, Timer is the ONLY job that you can do prior to taking the clinic but ideally you will take the Intro/Timer clinic at some point.  ALL officials should.

Chief Timekeeper – Wednesday, November 1, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  CGAC, downstairs meeting room.  This is the person in charge of the timers.

Judge of Strokes and Turns – Friday, November 3, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  CGAC, main floor meeting room.  Yes, it is a long one.  This is the clinic where you learn all of the rules regarding the start, strokes, turns, and finish of a race for each stroke.  We need LOTS of Judges of Strokes and Turns, ideally 18 or 20 per tank in an 8 lane pool.

Meet Manager – Thursday, November 9, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. CGAC, downstairs meeting room.  This is the person who organizes the meet.  It is easier than you might think, and very rewarding!

I will be scheduling more clinics prior to Nothers.  Those will include Recorder/Scorer, Chief Finish Judge/Chief Judge Electronics, Clerk of Course, and perhaps another Introduction to Swimming Officiating clinic.

If you have any officiating questions please contact me, Mark Lukings L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at

Club hosted meets help to reduce membership fees by 20-25% as well as reducing travel costs by attending fewer out-of-town meets. To ensure the Club has sufficient resources to host meets, most LAC swim families are required to work a minimum of 22 sessionsduring club hosted meets (please see below for exceptions). These sessions may be worked through officiating or working at the club’s food canteen, awards or other positions. Any unfulfilled session credits will be billed at a rate of $40.00 per session to the swim family’s Swimmer Account at the end of the season. Please note that this is not meant to be a “fundraiser” but rather an incentive to participate in the running of home meets. Swim families may receive up to 5 donated session credits from another club family to complete their credits, however any more than the 5 donated session credits must be approved by the board. Session commitments are waived for first year swim families with no prior competitive swim club affiliation, as well as for introductory and post-secondary students training full time with the club and for varsity swimmers, although assistance during swim meets from these groups is greatly appreciated.  First year families ARE required to fulfill the LAC orientation program. This includes participating in an Introductory to Swimming clinic during the swim season and a follow up “on-deck” mentoring session.

*** Families of Development swimmers who are not in their first year of competitive swimming who do not have a swimmer in another level are required to fulfill only 11 of the assigned session credits.***

*The number of session credits will be reviewed by the board in the fall upon club enrolment and may be subject to change.

There is a session credit FAQ under the "Parent Info" tab under "Session Credits.

Instructions for ordering swim equipment can be found on the LAC website under “Swimmers Info” under the “LAC swim equipment” tab. Also found on the website is the TAS shark card, you will need this card when purchasing Team Aquatic Supplies merchandise at swim meets or in their stores.
