WORKOUT CHANGES

Fri Nov 24 NO LAC workouts due to Nothers Invitational

Sat Nov 25 NO LAC workouts due to Nothers Invitational

COACHES REPORT

There was some good racing at our 2nd time trial last Saturday evening. Hard to believe our Nothers Invitational is fast approaching, the fall season is flying by and it underlines the importance of really focussing on trying to get just a little bit better on a daily basis.  The training habits you are forming now are the habits that will show up in competition sooner or later in the season, so hopefully you are working purposefully and persistently on good habits like streamlining and dolphin kicking underwater off the wall and stroking before you breathe on the break-outs and finishing every repeat and every set as well as you start it.  There are some who believe that competition is about "rising to the occasion", when in fact the opposite is true.  When you go to a swim meet your performance will not be magically elevated to a new level - what really happens is you perform at the level of your training in the days and weeks prior to the meet.  In the critical moment (the swim meet), we fall back on our training more than we "rise to the occasion." Thus the importance of practicing with championship effort over and over again, and putting up good "numbers" in your training, hitting those goal split times and goal stroke counts and goal underwater kick counts. How you swim in practice is how you'll swim in the meet, so you have to be honest with yourself about the level of effort you are putting into every little thing you do.

CONGRATULATIONS to first-time 2018 Regional Championship qualifiers at the October Time Trial: Eden Campbell, Madison Cann, Whitney Coome, Etienne Joulin, Esther Lu, Catharine Robinson, Mikayla Seddon, Maggy Yang, Aaron Yuan and at the November Time Trial: Erika Golder and Emma Park.

LAC Meet Manager: 2017 - LAC Nothers Invitational

IT’S OFFICIAL!

Fall Start-up and November Time Trial:  I just want take the time to thank Priya Garg, first year Meet Manager for her hard work and enthusiastic learning while managing these two meets.  Nice job Priya!  Thank you also to all of the other volunteers.  Obviously these would not be possible without all of you.

Nothers Fall Invitational:  It is getting close to too late if you would like to work senior official positions at Nothers.  A senior position is other than Timing and Strokes and Turns.  If you have done a clinic, or you know that you will do it before Nothers, and you would like to do the job, then please let me know now.  I will see what I can do.  If you have limited experience with the job and would like a mentor, please let me know that as well. *Note* if the postings for minor officials come out before these jobs are confirmed and you are worried about not getting any job then sign up for minor officials and, if/when I assign you a senior official job, then you can remove the minor officials sign-up then.  Not ideal, but if that's what it takes . . .

Strokes and Turns Mentoring: We have 8 positions available at Nothers in each of sessions 5/6, on Friday, and both the morning and afternoon sessions on Saturday and Sunday.  If you have taken the clinic but would like some on the job training then email me the session(s) that you are available and I will try to set it up.  There will not be sign-ups posted for these learning positions.  First come first serve.  One session per person.

Timing System Trainees: We are always looking for people who would like to try running the timing system.  This is a great job and is only learned on the job with a mentor.  If you are interested, please let me know.  If you can run a smart phone then you should have no trouble with this.  We always go out of our way to make room for people wanting to learn this job.

Officials Registrations: After a new official takes a clinic and starts getting experience, we need to register that official with Swim Canada.  When this happens and the registration reaches a certain point, and email is sent to the official.  The official must follow the instructions in the email to confirm their registration.  This is a reminder to please look for these emails from systems@swimming.ca and follow the steps to complete the required information on your account.  If you have spam blocking, please check to see if the email went into your spam folder and please make this sender acceptable to your spam filter.

ClinicsI have scheduled more clinics and the sign-ups are either posted or will be very soon.  Come out and see what the non-timing jobs are all about!  These last 4 classes will conclude this set of clinics.  More will follow in the New Year.  Please don’t sign up for clinics if you are not going to come to them.  If circumstances come up then remove your sign-up to make the spot available for someone else if the sign-ups are still open.

Meet Manager – Thursday, November 9, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. CGAC, downstairs meeting room.  This is the person who organizes the meet.  It is easier than you might think, and very rewarding!

Recorder/Scorer – Friday, November 10, 6:00pm to 8:00pm  CGAC, downstairs meeting room.  Works in the Meet Offices.  Duties can vary but involves using the Meet Management software to produce official results.

Clerk of Course – Saturday, November 11, 10:00am to noon  CGAC, downstairs meeting room.  Primarily deals with changes to the events and heats and helps swimmers get to the proper lane at the right time.

Chief Finish judge / Chief Judge Electronics – Friday, November 17, 6:00pm to 9:00pm  CGAC, downstairs meeting room.  Works in the Meet Offices.  This job is all about making sure the proper official time is assigned to each swimmer

Introduction to Swimming Officiating – Saturday, November 18, 10:00am to noon  CGAC, upstairs main meeting room.  This is the Timer and Safety Marshal (as well as a bunch of other stuff) clinic that everyone should attend at some point.

If you have any officiating questions please contact me, Mark Lukings L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at lac.coc@gmail.com

LAC SESSION CREDITS

Club hosted meets help to reduce membership fees by 20-25% as well as reducing travel costs by attending fewer out-of-town meets. To ensure the Club has sufficient resources to host meets, most LAC swim families are required to work a minimum of 22 sessionsduring club hosted meets (please see below for exceptions). These sessions may be worked through officiating or working at the club’s food canteen, awards or other positions. Any unfulfilled session credits will be billed at a rate of $40.00 per session to the swim family’s Swimmer Account at the end of the season. Please note that this is not meant to be a “fundraiser” but rather an incentive to participate in the running of home meets. Swim families may receive up to 5 donated session credits from another club family to complete their credits, however any more than the 5 donated session credits must be approved by the board. Session commitments are waived for first year swim families with no prior competitive swim club affiliation, as well as for introductory and post-secondary students training full time with the club and for varsity swimmers, although assistance during swim meets from these groups is greatly appreciated.  First year families ARE required to fulfill the LAC orientation program. This includes participating in an Introductory to Swimming clinic during the swim season and a follow up “on-deck” mentoring session.

*** Families of Development swimmers who are not in their first year of competitive swimming who do not have a swimmer in another level are required to fulfill only 11 of the assigned session credits.***

*The number of session credits will be reviewed by the board in the fall upon club enrolment and may be subject to change.

There is a session credit FAQ under the "Parent Info" tab under "Session Credits.
