NEWSLETTER 2017-18 ISSUE 30

WORKOUT CHANGES

ALL LAC swimmers are encouraged to participate in our annual Swim-a-Thon. It will take place the weekend of May 5-6, the swim times listed below in the Swim-A-Thon section will replace our regular schedule that weekend.

COACHES REPORT

There was plenty of racing last weekend, Maggie and David at the Canadian Swimming Championships in Montreal, and over 150 LAC'ers at our annual April Pentathlon. Maggie had 2 podium finishes in Montreal, winning gold in the 100FL and silver in the 100BK, both swims in club record time. On the strength of these swims Maggie was selected to both the Canadian Junior Pan-Pacific team that will compete in Fiji in August, and the Youth Olympics in Argentina in October. David raced to a big personal best in his 200BK and qualified for the B final in that event as well as the 100BK. Lots of great racing at the Pentathlon as well, with many of you swimming your first long course (50m) races of the year. Congratulations to our Pentathlon High Point Trophy winners (lowest aggregate time in 5 events combined):

9 Year Old Whitney Coome and Jackson Cooke

10 Year Old Maggy Yang and Ryan Ball

11 Year Old Niamh O’Leary and Jacob Seddon

12 Year Old Lauren Campbell and Ciaran Buyse

13 Year Old Sarah Tyrrell and Junsoo Pak

14 Year Old Sonya Demidenok and Carter Buck

15 Year Old Katie Callon and James Quigley

16 Year Old Leah Polito

17 Year Old Madelaine Shoemaker

And congratulations as well to first-time Regional Championship qualifiers from the Pentathlon Zachary Kostadopoulos and Frances Villaruz, and first-time Provincial Festival qualifier Maggy Yang.

Belated congratulations to first-time Provincial qualifier (from the Ontario Spring AA meet in March) Lucas Lin.

HUMBOLDT BRONCOS

Sadly, as you all heard, the Humboldt, Saskatchewan Broncos Junior A hockey team was involved in a serious bus accident in which there were 15 fatalities.  On behalf of the LAC family, please help us raise funds for everyone affected by this tragedy. We are asking that each family bring a donation to swim practice on Saturday morning at CGAC and sign a card offering condolences to the Humboldt hockey team, family, friends and community. Money will go directly to a fund being established by the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League in order to assist with the physical and emotional healing of all involved. There will be a table set up inside the front door at CGAC with a card for your swimmer to sign if they would like to contribute. Thank you in advance for your generosity and kindness.

Some of these goals are quite big and we need all the help we can get. Together if we all work together we all gain a lot. ALL LAC swimmers are encouraged to participate in our annual Swim-a-Thon. IT’S OFFICIAL!

LAC Long Course Pentathlon

We had great meet on Sunday!  Both sessions were fully staffed, we had a nice relaxed pace, almost 40 people got deck sign-offs for the positions they were working and it seemed like people were enjoying themselves.  Special thanks to Bonnie Marceau for continuing to help with this meet as our Competition Coordinator.  Congratulations to Shawn Smith, our first time Meet Manager, on a job very well done!  Special thanks to the officials who keep supporting LAC meets long after their swimmers have graduated from LAC.  Finally, thank you to the volunteers from LAC’s membership.  Having all of the jobs filled shortly after the sign-ups are posted is a huge stress relief for everyone.

LAC Hollandia Spring Invitational - May 11 to 13 - Senior Officials Please

Hollandia is just a few short weeks away and I know that our Competition Coordinator would love to start getting offers from people to work senior official positions.  These are all of the officiating jobs that are not Timing, and Turn Judges.  This includes Referee, Starter, Chief Timekeeper, Clerk of Course, Chief Finish Judge/Chief judge Electronics, Recorder/Scorer, Electronics Operator and Stroke Judges (walk the sides of the pool).  If you have taken (or are about to take) the clinic and can do the job alone or would like to try it with a mentor then please contact Greg Lewis atbritshay@sympatico.ca with the sessions and the jobs that you would like to work.  If you would like a mentor for any of the jobs please indicate that for each job requiring a mentor. Oh, and if you are looking for a sign-off, please let Greg know that as well.

Upcoming Clinics

The final clinics for this season are underway.  There are still 5 clinics to choose from.  I encourage you to take a clinic and actually try the job!  Officiating is much more interesting when you aren’t doing the same job every session.  If you were planning on attending more clinics this year then the time is now.  The only other clinics that I will be offering after these are a Meet Manager clinic and a Referee clinic.  The dates are still to be arranged for those.  Please sign up online, so that I can plan for the correct number of people, however, please do not sign up if you are not going to come. All of the remaining clinics will be held at Canada Games Aquatic Centre, in the Pool Level Meeting Room (Downstairs).

Clerk Of Course – Friday, April 13, 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM – Downstairs

Chief Timekeeper – Saturday, April 14, 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM – Downstairs

LAC SESSION CREDITS

Club hosted meets help to reduce membership fees by 20-25% as well as reducing travel costs by attending fewer out-of-town meets. To ensure the Club has sufficient resources to host meets, most LAC swim families are required to work a minimum of 22 sessionsduring club hosted meets (please see below for exceptions). These sessions may be worked through officiating or working at the club’s food canteen, awards or other positions. Any unfulfilled session credits will be billed at a rate of $40.00 per session to the swim family’s Swimmer Account at the end of the season. Please note that this is not meant to be a “fundraiser” but rather an incentive to participate in the running of home meets. Swim families may receive up to 5 donated session credits from another club family to complete their credits, however any more than the 5 donated session credits must be approved by the board. Session commitments are waived for first year swim families with no prior competitive swim club affiliation, as well as for introductory and post-secondary students training full time with the club and for varsity swimmers, although assistance during swim meets from these groups is greatly appreciated.  First year families ARE required to fulfill the LAC orientation program. This includes participating in an Introductory to Swimming clinic during the swim season and a follow up “on-deck” mentoring session.

*** Families of Development swimmers who are not in their first year of competitive swimming who do not have a swimmer in another level are required to fulfill only 11 of the assigned session credits.***

There is a session credit FAQ under the "Parent Info" tab under "Session Credits.
