COACHES REPORT

First, congratulations to everyone on some great time trial racing. Everyone looked great in their new team suits but, more importantly, everyone looked great in their races! We had twelve first-time Regional Championship qualifiers! CONGRATULATIONS to Hayden Bartoch, Heidi Bartoch, Mireyah Bartoch, Luke Degiorgio, Aduallah El Tatawy, Richard Liu, Declan Nolan, Rami Shafikov, Keaton Smith, Chloe Terner, Martin Todev and Jayden Wang. To review the message from the banquet about meet results at this time of the year: we like the cake metaphor - we are still in the early stages of training, figuring out the proper ingredients and putting them in the cake bowl in the correct proportions. We haven't started to blend everything together, the cake certainly isn't in the oven, and we're nowhere near the icing! If you were disappointed because you didn't get a PB at the first time trial, DON'T BE! You were looking for icing and we're nowhere close to that stage yet. The icing will be there when it counts the most! Secondly on the time trial: when you are learning a new skill for the first time, a stroke technique, or a proper dive or turn, you must practice it in competition after learning it in practice. If you get disqualified for trying a new skill in competition, wear it as a badge of honour, because you weren't afraid to try it! You will not get better at anything by not doing it - so CONGRATULATIONS (!) for getting disqualifed...if you were doing something for the first or even second time.

Secondly, one final congratulations to everyone on your great and many accomplishments in 2018-19, as recognized at our annual banquet. Belated congratulations to first-time Canadian Junior Championship qualifier George Trevor! The banquet always signals the next phase of our swimming year. The hectic start-up and registration process is behind us, on Sunday evening we took one last look back at a memorable 2018-19, and now it is time to look resolutely, determinedly, and confidently forward as we embark on the next big block of training, before we head into our fall racing season. Keep working on the ingredients! And remember it takes a long time to bake a really really good cake.

Please see the "News" section of the website for a re-cap of our 2018-19 award winners and some photos, and a link to the awesome slide show. And many many thanks once again to our banquet organizers Jane Callon, Christie Thomas, Dawn Cann, and Nicole Chambers, and our slide show creators Amy Hart, Mary Ball and Cara Maar.

IT’S OFFICIAL!

2019 LAC Fall Startup – October 20 – Success! – Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help at our 2019/20 season kick-off meet.  Much appreciated!  We got a lot of swimming done in a short amount of time.  That certainly kept  the office hopping!  There were a few infractions called, a bunch ignored, and some new Strokes and Turns officials trained on the bulkhead.  It was a great start to the Swimming season!  Congratulations to Tamara Thompson on receiving the final sign-off to become a level 2 official.  Thanks a lot for that Tamara!  We are always in need of people who are willing to ask for sign-offs and try new jobs!  Our ability to host meets depends on it and the amount of work is the same.  Thank you also to the people who reported potential concussions.  Keeping our swimmers safe is everyone’s responsibility!

Upcoming Meets! November Time Trial, Nothers Fall Invitational and Holiday Time Trial – Senior Officials Needed!  If you have taken the clinic and would like (or are just willing) to work a Senior Position for any of these meets, please email me, one email per meet, with what you can do to help.  A senior position is any official other than Timers and Turn Judges (ends of the pool).  It DOES include Stroke judge (sides of the pool) for Nothers.  Please include the name of the meet in the subject of the email so that it is easy to find.  If it is your first time trying a job please let me know that too so that I can make sure someone is available to mentor you.

Clinics – There are still 6 clinics to.  Please see below for dates of the remaining clinics prior to Nothers.  Sign-ups are on the LAC Home Page.  More clinics will be offered later.  Everyone is welcome to sign-up but session credits are only given the FIRST time you take each clinic.  We have records going back years.  Still, if you want a refresher, feel free.  Please do not sign up if you are NOT going to attend. The recent Starter clinic had 12 people signed up and only 5 of those showed up.  Fortunately another person attended on speculation and got in.  Sadly, 6 spots went unused and I know there were other people who wanted to come.  Clinics can be taken in any order but ideally the Introduction clinic is taken early.

If you would like to see a brief summary of what these jobs are then log into the LAC website and then click on this link: https://www.teamunify.com/SubTabGeneric.jsp?team=canlac&_stabid_=114217
