Newsletter 2012-13 Issue 1
WELCOME BACK to all returning swimmers and a special WELCOME to all of you who are first-time LAC'ers! It's great to be back at the pool and even greater to see all of you so excited about the upcoming year and eager to get going and start working. Our registration in the wake of this summer's Olympics has been excellent, and we are also happy to welcome several new coaches onto our coaching staff! Look for up-coming bios under the "Coaches" tab on our website.
Our 2012 summer season finished with many exciting results both nationally and internationally. Special acknowledgement one last time to our LAC'ers who represented Canada this summer: Joe B., Richard H., Jenna R., Matt R., and Brayden S.
The 2012-13 competition calendar has now been posted in the "Schedules" section of the website (along with the training schedule). Please keep in mind that there are usually one or two additions and/or deletions to the competition calendar each year. In addition to our traditional meets there are several new competition opportunities on the calendar; the provincial "festivals" are new; the regional (WOSA) championship meets have been re-worked; there are plans for an age group March Break Florida Training Camp; and the first "big" away meet opportunity is scheduled for Gatineau, Quebec in mid-December. Our first racing opportunity will be the Oct.21 Time Trial, and this year it will be followed later that day by our Awards Banquet at the Greek-Canadian Club. Be sure to mark this date on your calendar as the first important event of the year.
As always, be sure to visit the LAC website regularly for information updates - between the coaches, the board of directors, and the website, all of your information needs should be met.
We want to wish all of you the very best for the coming year and we hope to help all of you in the pursuit of your goals. DREAM BIG, believe in that dream and in yourself, work hard and, above all, HAVE FUN!! If you do all of these things, your 2012-13 LAC experience should prove to be a truly memorable one!
CONGRATULATIONS to SHANNON NELL, who has been named by Swim Ontario as the recipient of the Dr. Ralph Hicken Memorial Bursary.
THANK YOU to Richard and Darcy for their amazing presentation of their Olympic experience last Friday. The entire club wishes you both every success as you embark on the next chapter!
Team shirts- If any parents would like to place an order for this year’s team shirts please notify Mary Allen at email@example.com no later than September 26 along with payment. Please note that any shirts that have not been paid for by this date will not be ordered as I will not be collecting money at the banquet. The cost for the shirts will be $10 for short sleeve and $15 for long sleeve.
Personalized Items- I will be at the October Time Trial with Hoodies and warm up suits for swimmers to try on and order. I will also be taking orders for backpacks and towels at this time. These items will be ready in time for Christmas should you be looking for Christmas gifts. This may be the only order for personalized items until the new year so do not miss out!
Practice Equipment- If anyone is in need of a team suit, LAC swim cap or any practice equipment (fins, snorkel, pull buoy, hand paddles, mesh equipment bag) at any time please email Mary Allen at firstname.lastname@example.org and we can make arrangement for payment and pickup/delivery.
Team Aquatic Supplies- Will be at CGAC on Sunday October 21st during our time trial. They will have a full array of practice suits, caps, goggles etc. This is a great time for your swimmer to try on suits.
Hello everyone and welcome back for a new season with the London Aquatic Club! A special welcome to all new L.A.C. families.
We have a full calendar of LAC hosted meets again this year and, to support those, we will be hosting clinics, starting in October or November, to train new officials and to let people update their skills so that they will have new interesting ways to volunteer at our meets and so that the meets can be fully staffed. Watch for updates in the newsletter for times and locations. I also plan on hosting a 1 hour meeting to review officiating with LAC, how to advance as an official, taking the online clinics, and strategies to get your session credits.
In addition to our LAC hosted clinics, the Western Ontario Swimming Officials Association will be conducting a day of officials clinics on Saturday, September 29, at the St. Thomas Campus of Fanshawe College. You can attend one clinic in the morning and another in the afternoon. These regional clinics, held in the spring and fall, are normally the only opportunity to take the Starter and the Referee clinics since they are NOT available on-line. Morning clinics include: Referee, Chief Finish Judge/Chief Judge Electronics, and Strokes and Turns/Head Lane Timer. The afternoon clinics include: Starter, Meet Manager and Recorder Scorer. A special addition this year will be a clinic to train attendees on all of the rules related to PARA swimming. This clinic will run across both sessions. PARA clinics are available on an infrequent basis so, if you are interested, now is your chance. The clinics run from 9:00 to 11:30 A.M. and from 12:30 to 3:00 P.M. These clinics are free of charge and morning refreshments and lunch are provided for free as well. You can register for these clinics though your OSOA.CA account or by emailing Mike Williams at email@example.com. If getting to these clinics is an issue for you, perhaps we could arrange car-pooling. Let me know if you want to go but need transportation and we will see what we can do.
Finally, all officials that are not VERY active on the OSOA.CA website will have received an email on about July 8th from Ontario Swimming Officials Associationwith the subject OSOA Membership Renewal. If you received this, please read it and follow the instructions (click on ‘Please confirm my registration’) to reactivate your Officials account. This will only take you a few seconds. If you received this email and you do not do this then you are no longer considered an active official and your official’s status has already been set to inactive. Following these instructions will reinstate your status to active so that you will be eligible to officiate in the upcoming season. Currently, only about one half of our active officials from last year are still listed as active. Your cooperation would be much appreciated. If you deleted the email then please contact me and I can reactivate your account for you.
