Newsletter 2012-13 Issue 2

No workouts Mon Oct 8 as the pool is closed for Thanksgiving.

It's great to see such a good turn-out as we embark on a new swim season.  These first few weeks have seen over 200 swimmers hit the water, whether returning LAC'ers or those trying the competitive swimming experience for the first time. For all returning swimmers, let's make sure to warmly welcome all of our "first-timers", and help answer any questions they might have about our great club.

A few reminders on the swimming side of things: 1) check with your coach to determine exactly what swimming equipment you are supposed to have 2) make sure you are arriving at practice on time...walking on the deck at 5:30 is different than getting in the water at 5:30! 3) these first few weeks the coaches are interested in one thing above all else: good TECHNIQUE - pay attention to HOW you are swimming - HOW FAST you are swimming comes later.

One more noteworthy achievement from this summer's competitions: Jenna Roman achieved her first Senior National qualifying time in the 50FL at Age Group Nationals - CONGRATULATIONS Jenna!

Finally, WESTERN University is hosting its Alumni Reunion this coming Sunday in concert with a dual meet with McMaster University.  For those of you have yet to see the new pool at Western, this would be a great opportunity to check it out.  The only cost is parking as the admission to the meet is free. Racing starts at 1:30pm.  For more information check the "What's New" section of the website.

Will take place on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at the Greek Canadian Club on Sarnia Road. Social starts at 4:30 pm and dinner will be served at 5:00 pm. Our banquet not only recognizes the hard work and achievements of our swimmers from the past season it also introduces and welcomes our newest team members to the club. Please see the “events” section on our website for further details or contact:  Cindy Salmon @ or 519-474-3813

Its QSP time again.

We will again be doing the QSP magazine fundraiser. The magazine fundraiser is an excellent way to offset the cost of meet fees by purchasing subscriptions through QSP you normally would purchase anyway on your own. The fundraising portion as a percentage of the subscription price is approximately 35%. Of this amount, 80% is credited to the family swimmer (formerly called travel) account and 20% is retained by the club.

For the current year, we ask families to participate ONLINE. To encourage ONLINE use, the club will only retain 10% of the fundraising amounts for ONLINE orders.

Next year we plan to use the ONLINE method exclusively but for the current year, we are making the ordering by regular forms available. To obtain forms, please contact Stacey Richardson or go Online.

To participate ONLINE, you will need to log in to

The online code for LAC is 17084.

If this is the first time using QSP's ONLINE ordering, you will need to register first.

For those using the regular forms method, please ensure that all cheques are payable to LAC. These orders are due October 21 either at the Time Trial or at the banquet.

If you need order forms, booklets or have questions, please either email Stacey at or see her at the pool.

If anyone is interested in trying the online officials training but you need more information, I would be happy to help you get started.

The Western Ontario Swimming Officials Association clinics are coming up this Saturday, September 29, at the St. Thomas Campus of Fanshawe College. You can attend one clinic in the morning and another in the afternoon. Morning clinics include: Referee, Chief Finish Judge/Chief Judge Electronics, and Strokes and Turns/Head Lane Timer. The afternoon clinics include: Starter, Meet Manager and Recorder Scorer. A special addition this year will be a clinic to train attendees on all of the rules related to PARA swimming. This clinic will run across both sessions. PARA clinics are available on an infrequent basis so, if you are interested, now is your chance. The clinics run from 9:00 to 11:30 A.M. and from 12:30 to 3:00 P.M. These clinics are free of charge and morning refreshments and lunch are provided for free as well. You can register for these clinics though your OSOA.CA account or by emailing Mike Williams at If getting to these clinics is an issue for you, we could still arrange car-pooling. Let me know if you want to go but need transportation and we will see what we can do.

Lastly, a reminder (if you have not already done so) to please respond to the email that you may have received on about July 8th from Ontario Swimming Officials Associationwith the subject OSOA Membership Renewal. If you received this email, please read it and follow the instructions (click on ‘Please confirm my registration’) to reactivate your Officials account.
