CONGRATULATIONS to our 8 swimmers who competed at the Eastern Canadian Championships in Montreal last week.  There were 740 swimmers from 112 teams in the meet, for our 8 LAC'ers it was their first experience at this level, and they all stood up and performed well.  We had 19 personal bests out of 32 swims (59%) and 25 of 35 swims (including relays) where we improved upon our ranking (71%). Very special CONGRATULATIONS to MAGGIE MACNEIL, who not only set 3 club records and made 2 finals in the 15&under age category, but also set an ONTARIO RECORD in the 11/12 girls 200FL with a time of 2:21.87! She broke a record which had stood for 35 years, set in 1978, and Maggie also narrowly missed the national record in the 11/12 girls 100FL, swimming a 1:04.11 with the national record being a 1:03.68. WAY TO GO MAGGIE, and CONGRATULATIONS also to COACH DONNA!  Three other achievements of note: Vincent Cappa (400IM), Elgar Gong (50FR) and Nick Mitchell (200BK) all cracked the LAC All-Time Top 10 List for the first time, in the 15-17 boys age category.

CONGRATULATIONS as well to Brayden Salmon, who represented Team Ontario at a US Grand Prix event in Orlando, Florida last week.  Brayden made 4 finals at this international-level meet, as he continues his preparation for the World Championship Trials in April in Victoria.

Good luck to our swimmers competing in the 13&under Festival this weekend in our home pool.

We are still in need of assistance for equipment set-up and tear down for this weekend's Ontario Festival Meet. Sign-up is available via the Festival Job sign-up sheets in the events section of the website. Medium to light lifting is required but no electronics or previous knowledge is needed. The main function of these positions is to ensure the timing equipment and cabling is set up and tested correctly prior to the meet and properly stored following the meet. Those signing up should meet on the pool deck at 8am on Saturday and be ready to "tear down" following the final heat on Sunday. Note : To be eligible for the session credit, you must assist in both the setup and tear-down activities.

This meet takes place at the Magna Centre, 800 Mulock Dr, Newmarket on Mar 2 & 3. The deadline has now passed and only the LAC swimmers that indicated on the website have been entered in meet.

Personalized Items- I will be at CGAC on Friday February 22nd (4:00 – 7:00pm) with Hoodies and Jackets for swimmers to try on and order. I will also be taking orders for backpacks, towels, toques and name badges at this time. I will have team racing and practice suits with me if anyone needs new ones. FYI - Some items can only be paid for with cash or Cheque.

Practice Equipment- If anyone is in need of a team suit, LAC swim cap or any practice equipment (fins, snorkel, pull buoy, hand paddles, mesh equipment bag) at any time please email Mary Allen at and we can make arrangement for payment and pickup/delivery.

We had a very successful Level 1 Timekeeper and Safety Marshal Clinic on Friday night with lots of productive discussion. Thanks to everyone who came out.

Just a reminder that if you have signed up to work at a meet as a Timer, and we are short of Strokes and Turn judges, then the Minor Officials Coordinator may ask you to work as a Stokes and Turn judge to fill the empty positions. If you have taken the Strokes and Turns clinic, have tried the job and have discovered that it is not for you then please let me know.

Three reminders this week:

1) For those officiating at the Winter Festival this weekend, please remember to wear white, arrive and check in at least 45 minutes early, preferably at the beginning of the warm-up, bring your Officials Certification Card if you are interested in a sign-off for the position that you are working, and let the Referee know at the briefing if you are looking for a sign-off. If you have lost your card or took a clinic on-line, I will have cards with me and can sign-off your card for on-line clinics, as can Rose in the meet office.

2) A Strokes and Turns Clinic will be held at CGAC on Thursday, February 21 from 5:30 to 8:00 P.M. in the upstairs meeting room. This is a long clinic. Grab something to eat and bring that with you if it helps. Everyone is welcome. Sign-ups are available on the website. There are usually lots of jobs available at meets for people who are Strokes and Turns qualified.

3) The Western Ontario Swimming Officials Association will be holding their Spring Clinic Day on March 23 at the St. Thomas Campus of Fanshawe College. If you prefer live clinics this is an excellent opportunity to hear from some experienced officials. Also, if you want to learn how to be Starter or Referee then you should plan to attend, as these clinics are not available on-line. There is a session in the morning and another in the afternoon. Morning snacks and lunch are provided. There is no charge to attend.

A session credit will be given to anyone taking a clinic, for a new position, for the first time, on-line, at a club clinic, or at the regional clinic. Come out to any clinic for the first time, or for a refresher.
