Congratulations to all of our LAC swimmers who competed at the 2013 Winter Festival here in London on the weekend. The Swim Ontario Winter Festival is an Ontario Championship for 13 and Under  athletes who meet the Swim Ontario time standards. The level of competition was very high but our LAC’ers rose to the occasion, swam at an 83% improvement rate and found themselves visiting and revisiting the podium. A special congratulations to our first time provincial swimmers Alexander Pedda, Leah Polito and James Quigley...let's see how many new swimmers can qualify for the Summer Festival in Sudbury in June! The following are our 18 podium finishes in individual events:

William Stewart: 1st in 100BK,50FR and 200FR; Eden Vanderweg: 1st in 400IM, 2nd in 800FR and 200BK; Jessica Allen: 1st in 200IM, 3rd in 100FL;  Alexander Pedda: 2nd in 800FR and 400FR, 3rd in 400IM; Ellie Wong: 2nd in 100FR, 3rd in 100BK and 50FR; Brigitte Ryan: 2nd in 100BR; Brandon Ryu: 2nd in 100FL; Menley Langham: 3rd in 100 and 200BR.

An excellent demonstration of team spirit was shown by our 13 year old girls relay team who raced 4 relays and achieved 1st in the 4x100 Medley Relay, 2nd in the 4x50 Free Relay, and 3rd in both 4x50 Medley Relay and 4x100 Free Relay. Way to go girls! The coaches and athletes would like to thank the officials for all their hard work, and also the many non-competing LAC'ers and families who came to support their teammates throughout the weekend.

CONGRATULATIONS to LAC graduate Matt Roman (University of Kentucky) for his 4th place finish in the "C" final (20th overall) in the men's 200FL at the South Eastern Conference Championships in College Station, Texas last week. Matt also represented UK in the 500FR and 400IM events. His time of 1:47.4 (yds) in the 200FL gains Matt consideration for entry into the NCAA Championships in late March in Seattle.

Winter Festival has now concluded, and I would like to personally extend my thanks to the many volunteers whose efforts were instrumental leading up to and during this past weekend's event.  Swim Ontario was pleased with the meet's success, and very complimentary of how professional and prepared our club was.  Of course none of this would have been possible without the assistance and commitment of a great team of willing volunteers.  Again, my thanks.  We had our challenges at times, but through the collective efforts of our dedicated group, we came away successfully hosting SWON's first ever Festival championships with 35 total teams participating from all over Ontario.  Our feedback to SWON will also serve to make future Festival events even more successful.  There was some great swimming every session; congratulations to every one of our swimmers; I hope everyone who attended and participated enjoyed themselves.

Greg Lewis

This meet takes place at the Magna Centre, 800 Mulock Dr, Newmarket on Mar 2 & 3. The deadline has now passed and only the LAC swimmers that indicated on the website have been entered in meet. If you are traveling with the team please deposit your cheque for $250 in the LAC box at CGAC asap.

A special congratulations to Mark Lukings, our Club Officials Chair, for earning his Level 4 officials designation this past weekend. Mark has worked diligently towards this accomplishment and has earned the respect of his peers at OSOA. LAC senior officials are instrumental in our bid requests to host championship level swim meets.

Congratulations to our LAC officials and volunteers for a professional job of hosting the Provincial Festival swim meet over the weekend. A special thanks to our Meet Manager, Greg Lewis, and Meet Referee, Glenn Greig! Also thanks to all  the out of town officials who volunteered their time to help us make this event a success.

A number of LAC volunteers received deck sign-offs for various positions at the meet. Thank you to those officials that worked new positions for the first time. This was a successful officials training event.

Now that I am a Level 4 Official  I will be presenting all clinics, except Starter and Referee, so watch for some live clinics for some different positions.

We had a small but personal and very effective Strokes and Turns clinic this past Thursday evening. Janet Drescher from South Western Aquatics of Tillsonburg came out to present and did a great job for our students.

One more reminder. The Western Ontario Swimming Officials Association will be holding their Spring Clinic Day on March 23 at the St. Thomas Campus of Fanshawe College. If you prefer live clinics this is an excellent opportunity to hear from some experienced officials. Also, if you want to learn how to be Starter or Referee then you should plan to attend, as these clinics are not available on-line. There is a session in the morning and another in the afternoon. Morning snacks and lunch are provided. There is no charge to attend. You can register from your OSOA account or you can just drop in at 8:30 A.M. to register there.

A session credit will be given to anyone taking a clinic, for a new position, for the first time, on-line, at a club clinic, or at a regional clinic. Come out to any clinic for the first time, or for a refresher.
