Congratulations to our 18 swimmers who competed at the Provincial Championships in Nepean last weekend - our pb conversion rate was an OK 50% (35 personal bests out of 70 swims) and our ranking improvement was slightly better at 58% (41 out of 70 swims where we finished higher coming out than going in). As well, 8 of 15 relay lead-off swims were personal bests. For some of the team it was the first time competing at this level and, when you find yourself in that position, competing at a new (higher) level for the first time, you simply need to remind yourself that you've worked hard and you deserve to be there and it's just like any other swim meet. NO BIG DEAL! A few performances of special note: our medalists Jenna (2S-1B) and Vincent (1B); our other finalists Jessica, Josie,Aiden,Camille and Brandon; 100% pb'ers Jessica, Sabrina and Hayden; club record setter Jenna in the 13/14 girls 100FL; and first time qualifiers Vincent (Senior Nationals in the 400IM) and Sabrina (Eastern Canadians in the 100BR). Many thanks to our awesome chaperone Wendi Jackson!
The same weekend we had 50 swimmers racing at the Newmarket Invitational - we had 59% best times, with special congratulations to Madison Campbell, Nicole Fernandes, Neil Huan, Madelyn Horner, Emma Lazenby and Sydney VanBerkel, for achieving pb's in 100% of their swims! Congratulations as well to our medalists Mykaela Springer (2G-1S), Aitana Robinson (1G-1S), Menley Langham (1G-2B), Dominic Cappa (1G), Katelyn Dickey (1S-1B), Katie Flannery and Nathan Lethbridge (1S), Ericka Masse (2B), Emma Lazenby and Lindsey Wong (1B). Thanks to the coaches for pulling double-duty as chaperones for the team travellers!
South of the border LAC graduates Matt Kwatyra (University of North Carolina) and Leah Mayer (Seton Hall University) competed at their conference championships, with Matt finishing 2nd in the B final of the 200BK and achieving the consideration standard for entry into the NCAA (national collegiate) championships.
Finally, bon voyage to our LAC'ers heading to Fort Lauderdale for their March Break training camp - work hard, and have fun!
Western Ontario Swimming Officials Association will be holding their Spring Clinic Day on Saturday, March 23 at the St. Thomas Campus of Fanshawe College. If you prefer live clinics this is an excellent opportunity to hear from some experienced officials. Also, if you want to learn how to be Starter or Referee then you should plan to attend, as these clinics are not available on-line. There is a session in the morning and another in the afternoon. Morning snacks and lunch are provided. There is no charge to attend. You can register from your OSOA account or you can just drop in at 8:30 A.M. to register there.
A session credit will be given to anyone taking a clinic, for a new position, for the first time, on-line, at a club clinic, or at a regional clinic. Come out to any clinic for the first time, or for a refresher.
